Lal Jose directed light hearted comedy starring Dileep, Spanish Masala has opened to Mixed - Above Average reviews all over the world. The film is produced by Naushad under Big Screen Productions, and has a budget of around 7.20 crores and another 70 lakhs for printing and publicity. The movie has managed to get a decent opening at the boxoffice thanks to the Lal Jose brand of cinema and the proven track record of the combination between him and Dileep. It has Kunjacko Boban and Biju Menon playing important roles.
The movie has grossed about 2.5 Crores in its first week from 67 centers in Kerala. The film has managed to release in another 46 centers outside Kerala State, and has grossed another 50 lakhs from those centers. The film has not been removed from any of the centers in its second week as these days, most of the distributors enter into agreements with the exhibitors for a minimum guaranteed run at the centers. But the collections are likely to drop heavily from week 2 as Mohanlal - Roshan Andrews combo comes up with Casanovva in about 130 centers in the State.
The film being exclusively shot in Spain and Austria except for a couple of scenes in the climax, has well exceeded the budget for an ordinary Malayalam Movie going by the current industry average. Therefore it needed a wide release and a thunderous opening to recover the huge cost of production. It remains to be explained why the release of such a big budget movie was planned so badly, that it coincided with another big budget extravaganza, which released with a week of Spanish Masala's release.
The Satellite rights of the movie was acquired by Kairali for around 3 Crores and the overseas and audio rights has been sold for about 1.2 Crores as per latest trade reports. But as the word of mouth has been pretty mixed, Spanish Masala has a steep mountain to climb, if it needs to make decent profits
OPENING VERDICT - ABOVE AVERAGE
