Hit-maker Shankar's multi starrer Nanban has grossed about 150 Crores from its worldwide theatrical run. This is an extra ordinary feat for a regional movie and is second to Enthiran only. The film is still finding audience even in its 5th week of release. Nanban released in 625 screens in Tamil Nadu, on 12th January 2012. It opened in 27 screens in Chennai city alone, and further 400+ screens outside Tamil Nadu. It released in 25 screens in United Kingdom. The other major overseas releases were in US, Malaysia, and Australia.
It is believed that Nanban has grossed about 76 Crores in Tamil Nadu alone. It grossed 7.71 Crores in Chennai city in 5 weeks. The Telugu version of the film 'Snehithudu' has done extra ordinary business in Andhra Pradesh. The rights for the Telugu version was sold for about 20 Crores. It is rumoured that Nanban rights were sold to distributors in Karnataka, Kerala and other northern states for about 7-9 Crores, although believable reports have not hit the trade yet.
The Audio - DVD rights, and Overseas distribution rights by all means have the potential to fetch at least another 8-8.50 Crores each. The Tamil Nadu government had exempted Nanban from the Entertainment tax of 15%, for shows within the state. This helped the film to earn profits in its 2nd week of release itself.
The movie was filmed in a big canvas with a whopping budget of 60 Crores including promotion and publicity costs.
Nanban is an outright winner by all means at the Boxoffice by earning a total revenue of about 98 Crores till now, from its theatrical run, satellite - audio rights and other distribution rights. All Iz Well for this true Blockbuster.
