Ee Adutha Kaalathu is the latest in the list of new generation movies which has found success
at the boxoffice. Another trend setter of recent times, EAK took a decent opening considering
the fact that it did not possess any front-ranked star in its cast. But inspite of positive word
of mouth, the film got removed from many centers after week 2, which came as a surprise.
Still EAK had done enough in the first 2 weeks to recover its cost, and can be labelled as a film
which has earned profits at a rate which is higher than the industry average.

ORU KAL ORU KANNAADI is a SMASH HIT

Director Rajesh proves that he is the new King in Kollywood for light hearted comedies, as his latest venture OKOK starring Udayanidhi Stalin, Hansika and Santhanam, has been declared a smashing HIT by the trade. OKOK once again proves that quality humour still has takers at the cinemas, and it provides a hatrick of hits for Rajesh, who had earlier been at the helm of successsful comedies like SIVA MANASULA SAKTHI and BOSS ENGIRA BASKARAN..!!

The film has managed to gross 31 Crores worldwide, which is a huge achievement for a medium budget regional language film. The brand value of Rajesh - Santhanam combination has played a pivotal role in OKOK's success. Reports suggest that Santhanam has stolen the show with his antics.

OKOK was certified as "U" by the censor board, and has availed the exemption from entertainment tax within the state of Tamil Nadu. The movie is distributed by Red Giant Movies, and the satellite rights have been bagged by Sun TV. OKOK released on 13 April 2012, to packed cinema halls, with positive word of mouth.

Mammootty's COBRA suffers drop in second week - Boxoffice Gross Collection Update

The collection of Mammootty - Lal starrer COBRA has taken a dip in its second week, after securing a good opening. COBRA grossed 3.65 Crores in its opening week, which is commendable considering the stiff competition and the mixed word of mouth. The film has collected about 5.10 Crores from 12 days of theatrical run, and has already become a safe venture for its distributors.

The satellite rights have been bagged by Surya TV. The price is rumored to be in the range of 3.25 Crores. COBRA is the first clean hit for Mega Star Mammootty after Best Actor, which released in 2010 December.
The fall in collections in the second week shall be attributable largely to the mixed word of mouth. However the unfavorable weather conditions in Kerala also have played a part.

COBRA is made at a budget of 4.50 Crores, with another 75 lacs on printing and publicity.

Mayamohini Rules Kerala Boxoffice - 12.20 Crores Gross Collection

Dileep has struck gold at the boxoffice once again, with his brand new 'Mohini' avatar creating waves at the Kerala Boxoffice. MAYAMOHINI directed by Jose Thomas, scripted by Udaykrishna - Siby K Thomas has gone on to gross about 12.20 Crores from 16 days of theatrical run and is declared a BLOCKBUSTER by the trade. The distributor share shall soon surpass the magical figure of 5 Crores. Mayamohini managed to run housefull shows in major cities even in its 3rd weekend, despite heavy competition and mixed reviews.

With Mayamohini, Dileep reinstates his position as the King of Light-hearted comedies in Mollywood. No official reports on the satellite rights are available yet. MAYAMOHINI was made at a budget of 4.50 Crores under the banner of Color Factory, and distributed in Kerala by Manjunatha Release. The film is currently looking at a lifetime gross of 16-17 Crores from Kerala alone. Though there are promising releases coming up in Mollywood during the coming weeks and later in the year, it can be safely assumed that MAYAMOHINI shall occupy one of the top positions in the year end review, if boxoffice performance is set as a criteria.

22 Female Kottayam Grosses 2.1 Crore in 10 days - HIT - Boxoffice Collection Update

Ashiq Abu directed 22 FEMALE KOTTAYAM has opened well at the Kerala Boxoffice, grossing about 2.10 Crores from 33 release centers in 10 days. The film has obtained rave reviews from the critics and commoners alike, and as a result has managed to find its audience despite heavy competition.

The film is made a budget of just above 2 Crores and has the potential to recover the cost from the theatres itself. 22 FEMALE KOTTAYAM proves to be another path breaking film in Mollywood, which has tasted success at the boxoffice. The film shall be a huge uplift for the lead pair Fahad Fazil and Rima Kallingal, as it shall establish both of them as bankable actors who are capable of keeping the cash registers busy.

The distributor share is about to cross 1 Crore, which is a magical feat for small budget city-centric films. The film gives back to back success for Ashiq Abu, whose next venture IDUKKI GOLD has already created huge expectations.

Dulquer Salman set the Kerala boxoffice on fire, with his debut. Second Show recovered its
cost in 6 days and was declared the first hit of the year 2012. Made at a shoe string budget
Second Show continued the trend from 2011, where small films made it really big at the
cash counters. The film grossed 1.45 Crores in first week and held up really well in the
second week grossing another 80 lakhs. The failure of subsequent releases also helped
the movie march towards success. The Second Show had a decent run of 70 days in the
theatres, completing more than 5500 shows in Kerala alone. Owing to the sucessful run in

COBRA opens well - 2.8 Crores Gross in Opening Weekend (4 Days) - Boxoffice Collection Update

Megastar Mammootty's COBRA has opened well at the Kerala Boxoffice grossing about 2.80 Crores in 4 days of release. The movie released on 12 April in 73 screens in Kerala to mixed reviews from the critics and viewers. The satellite rights of the movie is bagged by Surya TV, and the price is rumoured to be around 3.25 Crores. Lal, Lalu Alex, Padmapriya and Kaniha also play important roles in the film.

The good opening which the film has managed to obtain ensures that the film is a safe venture for its distributor - Play House, as COBRA has already started earning profits, which is rarely seen in Mollywood. The fact that COBRA has grossed well despite heavy competitions from a startling MAYAMOHINI, a rock steady ORDINARY, and also 22 FEMALE KOTTAYAM, which is slowly picking up with excellent reviews, shows the Star Power of Mammootty.

If the film manages to obtain half decent collections during the weekdays, it can be rest assured COBRA will be a HIT. Janapriya Nayakan Dileep's latest release MAYAMOHINI has a struck gold big time at the boxoffice. The film had taken a magnanimous opening all over the state, and has grossed 4.97 Crores in its first 6 days of release itself. The movie is already in the Blockbuster category as it has potentially earned more than 50% return on investment within a week of theatrical run.

Mayamohini is the biggest Mollywood success in recent times if the per screen / per show average collections are to be considered. The film has held up brilliantly through out the week, with even working day matinee shows earning housefull shows in many centers. With the kind of response which MAYAMOHINI got in its second weekend, it should be understood that it was least affected by the new releases.

MAYAMOHINI has brought a huge boom in the Mollywood industry, as the Cinema Halls are live and kicking again for the Vishu season. The weekend shows all over state were mostly housefull with heavy returns, which in turn benefited the other releases.

The total Gross from Kerala from 9 days has crossed 7.40 Crores, with a share of 3.35 Crores, as per early reports. Dhanush's 3 is a HIT - 38 Crores Gross in 2 weeks

Dhanush starrer '3' has become highly successful at the boxoffice, grossing 38 crores from about 400 release centers (Tamil version). The film had taken a fantastic opening across South India, despite tough competition from regional films in other states. '3' has managed to rake in money, even though the word of mouth was mixed - negative, primarily due to the chemistry between the lead pair Dhanush and Shruti Hasan. The chart busters composed by debutant Anirudh Ravichander also did help the film's performance to a large extent.

The current trade scenario demands a good opening for any film which is being produced for an above average cost, to become successful. Pre-release hype, music and effective marketing have become some of the indispensable ingredients for success. Fortunately '3' managed to have it all, and hence struck the right chord with the audience from Day 1 itself. It became the highest ever opening for a Dhanush film.

The satellite rights have been bagged by Sun TV for a whopping 6 Crores. The overseas collection or rights amount are yet to be known in the trade, though the early estimate is about 0.5- 0.6 Million US Dollars, as 'Why This Kolveri Di' is a worldwide rage..!!

The fact that a movie with mixed reports has managed to do well, once again underlines the fact that under the  modern scenario, the mantra seems to be SUCCESS = A BANKABLE STAR + WIDE RELEASE

Dhanush keeps up his momentum gained in the past 6-7 months as new leases of success follow him. Another  SUPER HIT to his credit, and a promising debut for Aishwarya Dhanush.

Yet another instance where the makers attempted at capturing the imaginations of the youth
with the "so called" new generation malayalm movie, but failing miserably due to flawed
execution. Thalsamayam Oru Penkutty never picked up at the boxoffice, despite being
marketed as a slick entertainer and dearth of competitions.

The King and The Commissioner Collects 2.2 Crores in Second Week - Boxoffice Collections Update

The multi-starrer directed by Shaji Kailas, THE KING AND THE COMMISSIONER, featuring Mammooty and Suresh Gopi in lead roles, has grossed 2.20 Crores from Kerala in its second week of theatrical run. The combined total gross from 17 days is in the range of 7.90 - 8 Crores from Kerala alone, which along with the Satellite, other States and Overseas rights would easily be enough to the recover the cost of production of around 8 Crores. The distributor's share from the state is reported to be about 3.95 Crores.

It is also believed that the makers of the film sold the distribution rights of the film, in other states for a handsome price of 80 lakhs. The overseas rights amount is not yet revealed by the production house. Though the collections have dropped heavily since the first week, the huge opening which the film managed to obtain shall at the end of the day save the distributors from burning their pockets..!!

The exact figures as to the Worldwide Gross shall be difficult to quote at the current stage, but shall easily cross  10.25 - 10.50 Crores till date. THE KING AND THE COMMISSIONER is currently looking at a Lifetime Worldwide Gross of 11 - 11.25 Crores.

The film has managed to hold on to 53 theatres in Week 3, which is a decent achievement, considering the success of ORDINARY, and the pre-release hype which MAYAMOHINI had. However the movie is expected to lose out on a majority of its current theaters when COBRA, distributed by Play House itself, releases on April 12.

Mayamohini Boxoffice Collection Update - Earth Shattering Opening - 1.80 Crores in Opening Weekend

Dileep's latest venture 'Mayamohini' directed by Jose Thomas has taken the Kerala Boxoffice by storm. It has collected a humongous 1.80 crore Gross within 2 days of its release, and shall be in the profit zone in a couple of days, if the business keeps up during the weekdays. Mayamohini stars Biju Menon, Baburaj, Laxmi Rai and Mythili, besides Dileep, in pivotal roles.

The film is penned by hit-makers Udaykrishna - Sibi K Thomas duo, and has found wide appreciation among the family audience, who have already started to throng into the cinema halls. The movie got released in 74 screens across Kerala, to jam-packed movie halls. It should be admitted that, it has been a while since the family audiences have filled up the opening day shows.

Though, the word of mouth is pretty mixed, as it tends to happen with entertainers with such huge hype, the film should be a sure shot success at the boxoffice considering the opening it has managed, the holiday / festival season, and the record which light-hearted entertainers staring Dileep has had with the family audience in the past. Mayamohini is a tremendous come back for Dileep after the relatively poor performances of his recent releases like Spanish Masala and Vellaripravinte Changathi.

It has set the cash registers ringing all over the state, and HOUSEFULL reports are flowing in from all corners. Not even a super strong 'Ordinary', or a hilarious 'Housefull II', could prevent Mayamohini from taking a grand opening. However it needs to be seen whether, the release of Cobra on April 12, will have any effect on the juggernaut start which Mayamohini has secured.

Dhanush's 3 takes a Grand Opening - 17 Crores Worldwide Gross in 3 days

Aishwarya Dhanush directed '3' has taken an earth shattering opening in about 400 screens (tamil version). The gross collection over the opening weekend is about 17 Crores, which is the highest ever for a Dhanush film. The film had an unprecedented hype, due to chartbuster songs, and clever promotions. Centers in Tamil Nadu reported an average attendance of 95% during the weekend.

The film has collected about 1.35 Crores from 25 screens in Chennai alone. The word of mouth is pretty mixed, and it needs to be seen whether the film can carry forward the momentum during the week days. the makers of the movie shall start earning profits from the first week itself, as the satellite rights have been bagged by Sun TV for an astronomical amount - reported to be the highest ever paid for a Dhanush starrer..!! The budget of the movie in the range of 22 Crores.

VERDICT : HIT

Masters Boxoffice Collections Update - 1.5 Crore Gross from first weekend

Johny Antony directed crime thriller - 'Masters' featuring Prithviraj and Sasikumar, managed a decent opening at the Kerala Boxoffice, grossing about 1.50 Crores from 64 theaters (1020 shows). The film reported Housefull status in most of the major release centers on Sunday evening and night shows. Masters is getting Above average - Positive reports from the critics as well as the paying public, and is slowly gaining momentum during the week days.

The release of the film could have been planned better, because, as per the current scenario, it got sandwiched in between two big releases, namely, The King and The Commissioner, and Mayamohini, with other much anticipated Vishu releases like Kobra and Grand Master, also to be released in the forthcoming weeks. This situation leaves Masters with just one open week in front, and that too with an extremely successful Ordinary to compete with.

The cost of production of the film is around 4 Crores, and shall be recovered if the film has a good second week at the boxoffice, considering the satellite and other rights which it may fetch. The strategy of adding Sasikumar to the cast may have back fired in Kerala, but it is a big plus when the dubbed version of the movie releases in Tamil in May.

The King and The Commissioner Boxoffice Collections Update - Grosses 5.5 Crore in first week from Kerala

The King and the Commissioner had a magnanimous opening week, grossing about 5.50 Crores from Kerala. The film released in about 118 theaters in the state and has played 3240 shows in its first week. The distributor share from 7 days is in the range of 2.60 Crores, which along with the satellite rights price, which the film has received Mazhavil Manorama, of about 3.40 Crores, would make it a safe venture for the Producer / Distributors - Play House.

The movie has managed to do decent business in other states, as well as centers outside India. The early estimates hint at a gross collection of about  0.15 Million Dollars ( 0.75 Crores ) from International Centers and another 80 Lakhs from Centers in other states within India, making it a Total Worldwide Gross of about 7 Crores from its first week of release.

However, the film has suffered a drop in collection of about 20% per day, during the week, which is not an encouraging sign. The jump during the weekend was also minimal. The King and the Commissioner had a negative word of mouth, and has been removed from 39 Theaters in total, after 7 days. The collection from the second weekend ( considering Fri, Sat and Sun ) is about 1.4 Crores, which is about 55% drop from the first weekend. The movie is already struggling with the stiff competition from Ordinary and Masters, and the release of Mayamohini on 7th April will not help the film's cause either.

Though the budget of about 8 - 8.25 Crores shall be recovered, in order to classify the film as HIT, it needs to earn at least the industry average rate Return on Investment. The King and the Commissioner needs to gross atleast another 4 Crores to be classified as a clean HIT.Therefore the forthcoming week is extremely crucial for the film, and shall decide the Final Verdict.

Ordinary Boxoffice Collections Update - BLOCKBUSTER - 3.75 Crore Share from Kerala

Ordinary is undoubtedly the most profitable Malayalam Movie in recent times. Th film is raking in huge money even in its third weekend. Almost 70% shows on its third Sunday in the state were HOUSEFULL.!! It becomes the first BLOCKBUSTER movie of the year 2012 and has already earned a revenue which is double its cost of production. Ordinary has grossed a total of about 8 Crores from Kerala, in 16 days from about a 4600 shows.

The film had a huge jump in collections in its third weekend, which was in fact better than even its first weekend. As the holiday season has sprung in, the families have lapped up the film and it should not be a surprise, if Week 3 turns out to be the highest grossing week for the movie. The distributor share from Kerala has crossed 3.75 Crores and has already surpassed the cost of production of the movie. The Satellite Rights are sold to Surya TV, for an undisclosed price. However, going by the trade grapevine, the amount shall be around 2 - 2.50 Crores. No reported figures are available on this yet.

Even the reasonably good performance of 'Masters' could not daunt the collections of Ordinary, which is now an Express by all means at the Boxoffice. A widely believed public talk is that even Masters benefited from Ordinary, as there were heavy returns at the theaters which played Ordinary, and such returning viewers, jumped to Masters - which is also doing well with above average reports.
