COLLECTIONS UPTO 22 JULY 2012 TAKEN FOR RANKINGS

USTHAD HOTEL continues it good run - 7.25 Crores Gross in 3 weeks

Usthad Hotel held up reasonably well in its 3rd week taking its total gross to 7.25 Crores in 21 days, which is the highest any non-superstar-solo film has grossed till date this year. However tough competition has considerably eaten into its collections since week 2, and further with the start of the Ramzan season, the forth coming weeks shall see huge drops in the collections, especially in the Malabar area.

Going by the current trend, it will be tremendous business if the film manages to reach a lifetime gross of 10 Crores. The film has held up well in its fourth weekend with some major centers still reporting housefull shows.

THATTATHIN MARAYATHU on its way to a Blockbuster Run

Its party time once again for the youth sector in Kerala, as THATTATHIN MARAYATHU is on its way to become the third Blockbuster movie of the year 2012. The movie has performed unbelievably well in its second week, going one step higher by overtaking even its opening week gross of about 2.80 Crores, Early reports suggest that Thattathin Marayathu has grossed in the range of 3.20 - 3.30 crores in its second week, with improved footfalls and bigger theatres. The other recent movies which had grossed more in the second week than its opening week were Ordinary, 22 Female Kottayam and Diamond Necklace, and all have found their place in the list of popular hits of the year.

The film is going double strong in all the release centers in its 3rd weekend, however the collections in the Malabar area shall take a hit in the forth coming weeks, as the Ramzan season has already started. But at the same time it needs to be considered that, the number of new releases during the next month or so, shall be very few, and therefore Thattatin Marayathu is set for a huge run at the theatres.

Repeat audience is definitely the core strength of this movie's boxoffice performance, and reports suggest that the film is receiving an excellent response in centers outside the state like Bangalore, Chennai and Mangalore. Thattathin Marayathu is currently looking at a domestic lifetime gross in the range of 10.25 - 10.50 Crores easily. The Golden Era of Mollywood continues.

Rank # 1 - THATTATHIN MARAYATHU

Vineeth Sreenivasan's second directorial venture has set the Malayalam boxoffice on fire, with Thattathil Marayathu running successfully all over the state. The film becomes the most well received love story of recent times. With holy season coming up, the movie looks good for long run.

COLLECTIONS UPTO 15 JULY 2012 CONSIDERED FOR RANKINGS

HALF YEARLY BOXOFFICE REPORT - 2012

Mollywood has seen an unprecedented boom in the first half of 2012, producing 2 Blockbusters, a Super Hit and 6 Hits in 6 months. The year got off to a poor sluggish start with January producing no commercially successful films. But since the March - April - Vishu holiday season, the industry has seen back to back hits, with both big budget and small films hitting the jackpot.

Here is the Boxoffice Verdicts Half Year Report Card for the year 2012. The films are summarised based on their Boxoffice Status and Profitability.

BLOCKBUSTERS

MAYAMOHINI became one of the highest grossing solo film ever in Malayalam film history. The film may even hold an unofficial record of having the highest number of female footfalls in recent times.
Gross : 19.63 Crores

ORDINARY is perhaps the most talked about movie of the year. No one expected the success of this film to be so grand and magnanimous. Family Hit of the year. Gross : 15.10 Crores



SUPER HIT

The primary reason why Boxoffice Verdicts has classified SPIRIT as a Super Hit, is the huge profits which it would make, due to its low budget and the entertainment tax exemption it has been awarded by the State Government. The distributor share till date has crossed 4 Crores comfortably. Spirit need not neccesarily be a big bonanza grosser, but it will be counted as one of the more profitable ventures of 2012.

HITS ( In the order of profitability )

22 FEMALE KOTTAYAM created waves at Mollywood with its bold theme and presentation. It kept the golden run of new generation movies going. Gross : 4.52 Crores

DIAMOND NECKLACE came into reconing only from its 2nd week. It outperformed its competitors in the long run, with positive word of mouth. Gross : 5.21 Crores

MALLU SINGH took an enviable opening, and sustained pretty well due to its festive and mass appeal. Kunchako Boban sealed his spot as the most viable hero of 2012 with its success. Gross : 8.48 Crores

SECOND SHOW's success came as a pleasant surprise. It was first commercially successful movie of 2012. Another success story for the New Generation stable. Gross : 3.43 Crores.

GRANDMASTER took a decent initial considering its genre, and the absence of pre release hype, unlike Mohanlal's some previous ventures. As the word of mouth spread, movie did manage well to face off the challenge posed by Mallu Singh and later by Diamond Necklace. Though not an outright success, the movie did make more than industry average profits, considering the tremendous rights amount which it fetched. Gross : 7.00 Crores

COBRA managed a brilliant opening, but failed to sustain well enough to be counted as one of the top hits. But the film did rake in money, and it deifinitely a safe hit for its makers, if rights are also put into picture. It is widely regarded as the come back of Mammootty to genuine hits.
Gross : 6.05 Crores.



While, the above movies did make profits, films like CASANOVVA, THE KING AND THE COMMISSIONER, SPANISH MASALA and BACHELOR PARTY, form a list of films which released with huge fanfare, or hype, but failed to rake in the profits for its makers. But all these films, except Spanish Masala, find their place in the Top Ten Grossers of the year so far. Spanish Masala occupies the 11th position.

Films like EE ADUTHA KAALATHU (Above Average) and MASTERS (Flop) could have had better Boxoffice returns if they had timed their release a bit better, as these were potential HIT materials.

Overall, the year, till now has been extremely warm, as far as Mollywood Boxoffice is concerned, and films like USTHAD HOTEL and THATTATHIN MARAYATHU, both releasing by the end of the first half of the year, have already been declared as hits, by the trade.

Rank # 4 - NAUGHTY PROFESSOR

Baburaj's latest attempt as a solo hero has backfired big time, as the film has got a lukewarm reponse. Going by the negative word of mouth, it needs to be assumed that removals are around the corner.

USTHAD HOTEL has a 3.4 Crore Opening Week - Boxoffice Collection Update

The boom at the Mollywood Boxoffice continues with USTHAD HOTEL, which has taken a grand opening of 3.40 Crores in the first week. It had reported a gross of 2.15 Crores in the first 3 days itself, and the drop during the weekdays is about 40% which is pretty good considering that the heavy rains across the State would have considerably eaten into the film's collection especially during the evenings, where families throng the cinema halls. The distributor share from the first 7 days shall be around 1.60 Crores.

The film is rock steady in its second weekend showing less than 10% drop from its first weekend, which is tremendous by any yardstick. The film has already surpassed the life time gross of Dulquar's debut venture SECOND SHOW.  USTHAD HOTEL looks set for a lifetime gross of atleast 7-8 Crores., which would definitely help it's makers, recover its production and marketing budget of around 3.5 Crores from the theaters itself . Dulquar Salman has made a rocking start to his career, with his first 2 films hitting the bulls-eye, while Anwar Rasheed once again proves that he is the King of Commercial Cinema in Malayalam. It remains to be seen how much THATTATHIN MARAYATHU can slow down the juggernaut.!

Dulquar's Usthad Hotel opens at the first position, taking a staggering opening over weekend. The word of mouth of highly encouraging and the film shall make it big if it can hold up during the week days.

Spirit continues to be the number one choice for families this weekend. Though the heavy rains have marginally eaten into its collections of late, the Ranjith movie still finds takers across the state.

Bachelor party may have been panned left and right by critics, but there is no denying the fact that it took a graceful opening. But the collections started a free fall from day 3 ending the week as a mere good grosser. The collections since then has been nothing to rave about.

Rank # 4 - NO 66 MADHURA BUS

The M.A.Nishad directed road movie has opened at the fourth place in BOV Rankings this week. The film has largely been overshadowed by Ustad Hotel, and weekdays did not offer much either. Removals are around the corner.

USTHAD HOTEL takes a Grand Opening - Boxoffice Collection Update

Ustad Hotel has taken a fabulous gross of 2.15 Crores in its opening weekend (3 Days), with a share of about 1 Crore. Dulquar Salman is slowly but surely consolidating his position as a bankable star at the Mollywood Boxoffice, as his second venture, directed by hit-maker Anwar Rasheed, scripted by critically acclaimed Anjali Menon has opened to packed houses despite heavy rains, and has won over the critics too.

The movie released in 74 screens across Kerala on 29 June, and early reports indicate that the film would recover its cost of about 3.50 Crores from theaters itself. Ustad Hotel has managed to pull in crowds even during the weekdays, with even Morning and Matinee shows in metros reporting housefull with returns.

The movie marks a come back for Anwar Rasheed after 4 years into mainstream cinema, and produced by Listin Stephen, who also produced hits like Traffic and Chappa Kurish, Ustad Hotel looks for a long run at the boxoffice, and it currently looks to be 3.70-3.90 Crore first week. However, it needs to be seen how the new releases affect its fortunes at the boxoffice.

VERDICT : EXCELLENT OPENING
