Padmasree Bharat Dr Sarojkumar Opens Poor at the Boxoffice

The much anticipated satire movie penned by Sreenivasan, has opened to negative reviews in about 70 centers in Kerala. The movie has garnered some negative publicity as it has some controversial remarks about the reigning superstars of Malayalam Film Industry.

The first week shall end at about 60-65 crores, which is well below average for a movie with such high expectations. the film could not take advantage of the failures of Kunjaliyan and Asuravithu. The word of mouth is poor and therefore the collections shall come to a stall, once Spanish Masala and Casanovva releases in the coming weeks.

It will be a miracle if the film becomes a profitable venture after the luke warm response it has received in it's opening week.

01. Don 2  - The Don still rules the Boxoffice. The worldwide collections have crossed 200 crores, the 4th film to achieve this feat ever, after Three Idiots, Bodyguard and Ra One. The collections went for a freefall after the 2nd week, but the huge release has saved the film. It continues to top our list, as the cine-world eagerly awaits Agneepath on Jan 26 - HIT


02. The Dirty Picture - Vidya Balan's scorching screen presence has helped the film sail over 50 days at the theaters, and the number of screens have been  increased in it's 7th week, which has not happened for any other film released in 2011. The Dirty Picture is the 3rd most successful film of 2011 behind Bodyguard and Ready. - BLOCKBUSTER

03. Players - Another Disaster to the name of Junior Bachchan. The film has failed miserably at the boxoffice and has been completely rejected by the viewing public, grossing just about 30 crores all over the world. - DISASTER

01. Nanban - The Three Idiots remake grossed about 30 crores in its opening weekend and about 50 crores in its first week. The film has already attained a blockbuster status and is aiming at a lifetime time gross of  about 100 crores. Nanban is the clear winner among the festival releases. 02. Vettai - The Lingusamy multistarrer has not let the audience down. Though severely affected by the overwhelming popularity of Nanban, Vettai which released 2 days later, has made its presence felt too. The film has done extremely good business in rural areas and overseas alike. the 5 day gross is about 21 crores from 450+ centers worldwide. - HIT

03. Kollaikaran - The low budget Pongal release could not garner even interest amongst the big budget multistarrers. It has been removed from almost 80% of screens it released. It is believed that the film will get it's run once the collections go down on Nanban and Vettai - FLOP

02. Oru Marubhoomi Katha - AOPMN has been one of the most successful films of 2011 and still continues to do well due to the poor performances of new releases. The film has grossed about 10 crores in 5 weeks. It shall continue its theatrical run till 26 Jan, when Agneepath and Casanovva releases. - SUPER HIT


03. Beautiful - The disastrous performances of new releases Kunjaliyan and Asuravithu has given Beautiful, the classy hit, an extended run. Widely regarded as a path breaking attempt, the film has grossed about 3.5-3.75 crores in its theatrical run alone, making it a highly profitable venture for the makers. - HIT

Vettai takes an excellent opening at the boxoffice

Lingusamy directed Arya-Madhavan starrer, Vettai has grossed about 21 crores in 5 days. The film released in 450 centers across the world, and carries decent word of mouth. This is the biggest opening for any film starring either of these actors, at the boxoffice.

The aggressive promotional campaigns undertaken by the distributors UTV Motion Pictures, have paid rich dividends. The film is performing extremely well outside India, however it is widely believed that it has been heavily over-shadowed by Nanban in other states India.

While the theatrical run of the film is going strong, the discussion for Vettai's Hindi remake has already begun. Lingusamy will continue to wield the microphone for the film produced by UTV Motion Pictures. It is widely believed that Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor will be roped in to play the brothers in the Hindi version.

Nanban crosses the 50 Crore mark in Week 1

Super hit Director Shankar's latest multi-starrer Nanban, has grossed about 50 crores worldwide in it's first week of release. The film had taken an earth-shattering opening, but the collections have dropped about 45% in the week days. But regardless of that, it is quite a feat that the movie has crossed the 50 crore mark within a week itself, inspite of the competition it faces from another multi-starrer Vettai.

Festival season films do take big openings, but this is nothing short of phenomenal. Vijay's previous release Velayudham had managed to gross about 40 crores in it's opening week. The film carries extremely positive review world wide and is aiming at a life time gross of about a 100 crore, which has been achieved by only 2 films in the past - Enthiran and Mankatha.

OPENING VERDICT - BLOCKBUSTER

Nanban takes an earth-shattering opening at Boxoffice - Exempted from Entertainment Tax

Ilayathalapathy Vijay's multi-starrer remake, Nanban, has taken an earth-shattering opening across the world. The pre release hype has worked in favour of the movie, which was always guaranteed an awesome initial, due to the brand value of Director Shankar, and also due to the faithful Vijay fans worldwide. The movie had released huge at 500+ plus screens in Tamil Nadu alone. All the media reviews have given it a 'thumbs-up', making it almost certain that Nanban will be the highest grosser ever for Vijay.

The initial word of mouth is unanimously positive, and the main highlight is touted to be the role played by Vijay where he has shed his heroic image and has delivered the performance of his life. The fact that Nanban is the remake of an All Time Blockbuster - Three Idiots, has not kept the watching public away from the theatres. Some sections even believe that the remake is better than the original itself.!

As per the early estimates, Nanban has grossed 8 - 8.25 Crores in the Opening Day itself. And the collections are expected go up during the weekends. The Trade Pundits are of the opinion that Nanban will go on to gross about 50 Crore in the 4 day extended Pongal weekend itself. However the release of highly anticipated mass masala multi starrer entertainer Vettai on 14th January may cause a slight dip on the collections over the weekend. However the news is that the family audience have already lapped up the movie and all the tickets for first 4 days are sold out in Chennai, were the film released in about 50 screens.

Boxoffice Verdicts believe that the film shall go on break the Mankatha record of 130 crores and emerge the biggest hit of Vijay's career. The performances from Jiiva and Sathyan also have been much appreciated, and the film shall give Jiiva a much needed uplift after the recent string of flops at the box office.

The icing on the cake is that the film has been exempt from Entertainment tax in the state of Tamil Nadu, as per the new policy. Nanban is the first movie to be given such an exemption, This would make the distributors Gemini Film Circuit, much more happy as atleast 70% of the films revenue is touted to be generated from Tamil Nadu

The film, made at a budget of about 60 crores shall break even in Week 1 itself. The satellite rights of the movie has been bagged by Vijay TV.

Kunjaliyan Opens Average - Word of mouth is Mixed

Kunjaliyan had all the potential to draw decent family crowds to the theatres before its release. Saji Surendran - Krishna Poojappura - Jayasurya combo, which has delivered some watchable re-hashes in the past, once again tried the time tested formula. But this time around, they may find it difficult to escape with decent collections.

The film released in 60+ centers in Kerala and was expected to take a decent opening as Jayasurya was fresh from delivering a hit in 'Beautiful'. And to be fair, it did receive a decent patronage, but the movie could not generate the positive vibes which may have helped it sail through.

The opening has been pretty average at best with minimal jump during the weekends. the film may be expected gross about 1 - 1.25 crore in its opening week, but nothing substantial after that. The sole hope was a decent holding up on Monday, but it was never to happen. The collections have dropped by 50% on the weekday and the film is aiming at a lifetime gross of 2.50 Crores at best.

The shoe-string budget may save the producer from burns, but at the moment the trade is not gung-ho about the fortunes of the movie. With big-fat Pongal releases coming up this weekend, the movie will be almost dead by this week. Going by the huge fan following which Vijay enjoys in Kerala, the charisma of Shankar (Director) and the aggressive promotions of UTV for Vettai, the future looks dark for Kunjaliyan & family.

Asif Ali's wait continues - Asuravithu disappoints at the Boxoffice

The wait for a solo hit continues for Asif Ali, as his latest release Asuravithu has garnered negative reviews from the viewing pblic and critics alike. Asif had become a sort of rage amongst the youth after the tremendous success of his path-breaking films in 2011 - namely Traffic and Salt N Pepper. His first try at action has not clicked at all. A K Sajan once again has brought an half baked story to the table with nothing new to offer.

Th movie had received about 50-60% opening which is pretty decent for a solo film of an actor of Asif's stature. But the film could not build on the opening as the content was not up to the mark. It will be tough times ahead for the film as Mohanlal's Oru Marubhoomikatha and Jayasurya's Beautiful are still going super strong in their 4th and 6th weeks respectively. The movie released in 53 centers in Kerala.

1. Players - Abhishek Bachchan's dry run continues at Boxoffice, with his latest release Players being rejected by the audience at outset. Though the film has 3 open weeks in front, the exhibitors may try their luck with smaller films releasing next week - POOR OPENING

2. Don 2 - The King's return has become yet another money-spinner with over 175 Crores nett collections from all over the world. It becomes the second highest grosser of the year behind Bodyguard - HIT

3. The Dirty Picture - Vidya's show rules the roost even in its 4th week, with the collections holding up even after the release of Don 2. The 3rd most successful film of the year after the Bodyguard and Ready - BLOCKBUSTER

1. Mounaguru - It is the big-break for Arulnidhi. The positive word of mouth has spread like wild forest fire, the film has found its place in almost all the Top Ten list of 2011. The film has grossed about 6.5 Crores from Tamil Nadu alone - HIT

2. Rajapattai - The Vikram starrer took a fantastic opening, but the content, which made a mockery of the viewers has led to a free fall in collections. The film is slowly settling into one of the average grossers of the year, with the Pongal releases around the corner  - BELOW AVERAGE

3. Osthi - A lot was expected out of the dynamic combo and Dharani and STR. But the neither the presence of a glamorous Richa, or the fast paced numbers by Thaman could make the film work big time. Still Osthi has spinned enough money to keep the distributors happy - ABOVE AVERAGE


Mollywood


1. Oru Marubhoomi Katha - One of the most entertaining combo in the history of Malayalam cinema has come back with a breezy tale laced with tilting humour. Although its no where near the best of their works, AOPMN has become one of the most successful films of the year grossing above 8 crores in 25 days and still going strong - HIT

2. Beautiful - It is beauty-full of class. Undoubtedly a trendsetter of recent times, and it has brought out the best in every artist associated with it. The bold dialogues have found there takers amongst the youth and Beautiful ends the year with a Bangg - HIT

3. Kunjaliyan - A good example of how a decent entertaining theme can be presented in rash crap manner. It has taken a better opening than its competitor Asuravithu, but the future of the film does not look good as the word of mouth is below average. The return of Jayaram - Kamal combo after a gap 12 years did have its own moments, but were a bit too little  in number and too scattered across the movie. The film started slow and could not pick up as the content was pretty average. The audience could have guessed what the next dialogue will be even in their sleep. But the one thing which works for such comic-melodramas, is the relentless support from family audiences. Jayaram still remains the Favourite Hero for families, his antics and complete failure of other releases saved the film to an extent

Though, re-creating the magic of Dabangg was a next to impossible task, STR and Dharani managed to bring their own style and flavour into Osthi. It took a grand opening all over the world, the first day grossing above 7 crores. However, the word of mouth was mixed, as it will be the case with such mass films, and collection took a downslide from Week 2. But the job was done, and Osthi had collected enough to recover the cost of production. printing and publicity. Kalasala and Neduvaali will continue to be played in FM Radios for a few more months. Even though the film was expected to do much better than it actually did, it proved STR's star power as a mass hero and ended up as his highest grosser till date overtaking Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya

Selvaraghavan's brand of romance once again works at the box office. A combination of a hard hitting storyline, scintillating performances from the lead pair, haunting music from G V Prakash, kept the cash registers ringing in spite of a slow start. Although it cannot be classified as a runaway hit, it made its mark especially metro areas. The collections from B and C centers were nothing to rave about. But the positive word of mouth and reviews from the media, brought repeat audience into the Cinemas.

Oru Marubhoomi Katha Rules Kerala Box Office...!!!

The Kerala Box Office is live and kicking after a short hibernation. Out of the Festival season releases, the Mohanlal - Mukesh starrer Oru Marubhoomi Katha has emerged the clean winner. The film has been lapped up by the family audience in its 3rd week, after youth had given it a head start. The film has already grossed more than 8 crores in 3 weeks from its release centers and well on its way to touch the 10 crore landmark as the new releases Kunjaliyan and Asuravithu have garnered mixed to below average reviews.

It marks the end of an astonishing year for Mohanlal who has come back to reclaim his number one spot, when it comes to the box office performance of films. He kick started the year with a couple of blockbuster multi starrers, followed it up with a scintilating performance in Pranayam. He then returned back to his good old mates Sathyan Anthikad and Priyadarshan to deliver back to back hits in the form of Snehaveedu and Oru Marubhoomi Katha.

All the theatres in major cities are still getting housefull shows in the weekend, and the removals have been less than 50% on an overall basis
