Boxoffice Review - 2013 Week 19

RANK # 1 – NERAM

Neram emerges a HIT with a 2.2 Crores gross in the first week. With late releases and shifts to bigger theaters  in the second week, the film looks set for a good run at the boxoffice. LJ Films seem to have a midas touch in picking up projects with a small canvas and making it work big time at the Mollywood boxoffice. Kudos from BOV.!

RANK # 2 – BHARYA ATHRA PORA

Bharya Athra Pora continues its family juggernaut. By holding up in 60+ theaters in the state, BAP has achieved something which only 3 other films have managed to do in this year – Kammath & Kammath, Sound Thoma and Ladies & Gentleman. The venture has reached a profitable position, earning a share of 1.6 approx from the state.

RANK # 3 – MUMBAI POLICE

Mumbai Police loses its steam unexpectedly in the third weekend. The film has lost a considerable number of capacity theaters in the rurals, but continues to perform well in the metros. The share from 17 days is 2.55 Crores approx. Mumbai Police may haveeasily recovered the cost, but requires yet another decent week to stabilize it’s HIT status.

RANK # 4 – AARU SUNDARIMARUDE KATHA

ASK opened to below average response in 40 theaters. The venture may have caught up some attention due to the variety in the theme and presentation, the boxoffice does not reflect the same.

RANK # 5 – IMMANUEL

Immanuel crawls back to this week’s BOV Top Five holding up in 20 theaters in its seventh week. The film continues to do extremely well in Trivandrum and Calicut. The film is a sure shot in B and C centers due to the word of mouth. A genuine hit for Mammootty, and Lal Jose completes a hat-trick.

BOV Boxoffice Review - 2013 Week 18

RANK # 1 – NERAM

Neram tops the BOV rankings this week with an excellent opening at the metros, and a solid performance at the rural single screens. A HIT is definitely on the cards as no major releases are coming up this Friday. The bilingual is being distributed by LJ Films in Kerala.

RANK # 2 – MUMBAI POLICE

Mumbai Police had a steady second weekend adding on to the first week gross of 3.50 Crores. The film, produced and marketed at a cost of 5.75 Crores, has already broken even and is moving towards a HIT.

RANK # 3 – BHARYA ATHRA PORA

Bharya Athra Pora raked in the moolah with decent family support. The low cost factor drives the movie to an average earner category. Not much can be expected from here on as the spotlight has been grabbed by Neram. BAP had just one week to cash in, and may just manage to recover the cost.

RANK # 4 – HOTEL CALIFORNIA

Hotel California had the hype and the potential to do better business at the Mollywood boxoffice, if it had not got sandwiched between a couple of excellent releases, and possessed better content to show off. Tight competition plays this movie in, despite carrying a ‘watchable’ opinion. A solo release could have made the difference.

BOV needs time to understand why this movie got released now. The content is reported to be above average, but the release strategy and timing could not have been much worse.

BOV Boxoffice Review - 2013 Week 17

RANK # 1 – MUMBAI POLICE

Mumbai Police fired big time at the Mollywood boxoffice last weekend to become the numero uno out of the post Vishu releases by a good distance. The metros have given the film a thumbs up, however it would be a surprise if Mumbai Police sustains in rural single screens more than a couple of weeks. MP looks at a lifetime gross of atleast 6.75 – 7.00 Crores if it can sustain well on the second Friday.

RANK # 2 – HOTEL CALIFORNIA

Hotel California has not picked up as well as expected, but managed to come out unscathed from the weekend, where a stupendous Mumbai Police climax stole the show. The verdict is pretty much unclear as of now, which makes the second week of paramount significance.

Bharya Athra pora has opened to average houses with mixed opinions. A decent run shall render the venture a safe one. BAP needs to cash in the family interests this coming week to achieve the same.

Sound Thoma drops to No 4 this week behind the new releases, but still manages to earn a better gross than Immanuel in Week 04 due to higher number of screens. Another Hit to Dileep’s name and Vyshakh’s enviable record of failure-less career remains intact

Immanuel has definitely outperformed Sound Thoma in Week 04, if a per-screen average is considered. The removals last Friday hampered its earnings to a reasonable extend.

Mumbai Police Makes Strong Start

Mumbai Police opened to positive reviews in 79 screens across the state, with an opening day gross in the range of 75 - 80 lakhs. The growth over the weekend is expected to be anywhere around 20-25% which would place the film at a favorable position going into Monday. Mumbai Police looks set for a strong opening week of 3.25-3.50 Crores gross.

The movie seems to have withered the competition from Hotel California and Bharya Athra Pora, but may have opened even better if it had got a solo release. As the film is of a genre which does not hugely depend on family support, the distributors could have held it back for another week, before unleashing it in mid May, where it still had a couple of open weeks to cash-in the vacation.

BOV Boxoffice Review - 2013 Week 16

After a short and forced hiatus, BOV is back with a bang. Here is the verdict for the Mollywood Vishu Boxoffice Battle.!

RANK # 1 – SOUND THOMA

True star power belies any word of mouth.  Dileep once again proves that he is the best bet at the Mollywood in the current state of affairs. He lifts Sound Thoma to financial success with a stupendous performance.  Despite the mixed initial reports and tough competition, Sound Thoma sprints to the finishing line with audacity.

Gross : 7.92 Crores (24 Days)

Verdict : HIT

RANK # 2 – LADIES & GENTLEMEN

Some combinations are craved for. Ladies & Gentleman presented us one of those, after one and a half decade. When Siddique and Mohanlal come together after Vietnam Colony, the place for a film lover is right at the theatres. Though the product failed to deliver anywhere near what was expected from it, the good opening secures Ladies & Gentlemen a safe position at the boxoffice.

RANK # 3 – IMMANUEL

Mammootty’s successful 2013 continues with Immanuel. The tremendous vibe which it has managed to created amongst the viewers ensures that the film is here to stay for a long time. A shoe-string budget meant that the film broke even in the second week itself. Fahad Fazil keeps up the momentum gained from Amen.

RANK # 4 – AMEN

Class and quality always has its place in this industry. Hats off to Farid Khan for placing his trust on a Director who has produced a couple of gems which have gone unnoticed at the boxoffice. Amen may or may not appeal to you, but the boxoffice success sure does appeal to the trade pundits.

RANK # 5 – CLIMAX

Climax has failed at the boxoffice miserably, without much patronage from either the theatres or the viewing public, as the industry, which is already facing severe theatre shortage, is forced to push over the products with average content.
