Kammath & Kammath Massive Opening - 1.43 Crores Opening Day Gross

KAMMATH & KAMMATH secured a  big bang opening day gross of 1.43 Crores, a per early estimates. The major centers Trivandrum, Ernakulam and Calicut witnessed a near 100% opening, with the suburbs too registering above 85 / 90% on the majority of shows on Friday. The opening day can be assessed as something which has lived up to the expectations as K&K saw Megastar Mammootty and Janapriya Nayakan Dileep come together for the first time since Twenty 20 in 2008.

The opening was more or less guaranteed, as it is, for a multi starrer mass film starring two of the crowd pullers of highest pedigree in Mollywood, with a script from Udaykrishna - Sibi K Thomas, known for their finesse in alluring the crowds to the cinema halls with mass entertainers deep rooted in comedy.

The word of mouth is mixed - negative, as it can be seen with most of the masala pot boilers, but when it comes to filling up the cash boxes, MULTISTAR + 100 CENTERS + COMEDY - nothing else works to this extent, as such in Mollywood.

The lifetime gross of Kammath & Kammath seems a bit too vague to be predicted now, as the word of mouth is not too encouraging, and as ROMANS continue their juggernaut despite the big release last Friday. The release and success of LOKPAL shall also have an intangible effect on the final verdict for the movie. Vishwaroopam has already won accolades in Kerala, and further is to come Kadal, with the deadly combo of Mani Ratnam - AR Rahman.

Whether Kammath & Kammath ends up as a big winner depends on how well it can hold up during the weekdays. Unless the families reject the movie outright, a first week gross of 6.75 - 7.25 Crores looks like an easy task for the movie as of now.

ROMANS has a 4.40 Crore first week - HIT

ROMANS has set the 2013 Mollywood Boxoffice on fire with a 1^stweek gross of 4.40 Crores from 76 theatres. The film has already been declared a HIT by the trade, and the final boxoffice verdict depends on how the familes support the movie in the forthcoming weeks, and how well Kammath and Kammath fares at the boxoffice.

The movie continues to screen in 75+ screens in the state, in the second week of theatrical run, still reporting housefull shows in the evening even during weekdays. It is a welcome change for 2013, which had seen a couple of small films perform average, and was yet to see any movie making it big at the collection points.

ROMANS currently look at a lifetime gross of 7.75 – 8 Crores, and may manage to collect even further, if Kammath & Kammath  fail to hold up after the big initial which it is bound to collect. But whatever happens from now on, ROMANS has become the first HIT of 2013.

Annayum Rasoolum, Nee Ko Njaa Chaa do average business

The new releases at the Malayalam boxoffice have escaped with decent returns before the big multi-starrer mass masalas raid their pockets.

Fahad Fazil’s first attempt at a full length non-urban role, may have earned him good accolades at the the critic’s desk, but ANNAYUM RASOOLUM has failed to exploit the favourable scenario it was presented with, in the relatively quiet month of January at Mollywood. The lack of entertainment value and the perceived lag, which induced a reduction in length by about 10 minutes, has kept the undiscerning audience away since the word of mouth spread. But still, it needs to be assumed that, for a movie of its genre, the Rajeev Ravi’s debut venture as a director has performed not too bad at the boxoffice. The film is not expected to add much to its kitty, as removals are just around the corner.

Gross : 2.30 Crores (17 Days)

Verdict : Below Average

NEE KO NJAA CHA had a limited release at 25+ centers, but deservingly got an array of late releases and promotions to bigger screens in major centers, during its second week, due to public appreciation. However  the film, may suffer at the final verdict, as it just had one open week, since it got the additional screens, to bring in the collections, before ROMANS released. The film has managed to hold up strong in 40+ centers in its third week, though it is just a matter of time before KAMMATH AND KAMMATH eats into its screen space. The skinny budget would ensure that the producers break even, bringing the satellite rights into the picture, but it needs to be seen how the distributors’ profit statements fare.

Mr Marumakan, despite not being a clean hit, did attract footfalls to the cinema halls, and grossed well above a majority of the hits in 2012. The high cost of production prevented the movie from earning industry average profits, though, the venture did break even.

Thappana had a meagre opening, but clinged on to the screens due to the relatively better word of mouth than its competitor. Definitely a profitable venture.

The film proved that tiltillation does work once in a while in Mollywood boxoffice, just like Rathinirvedam did last year. Though the over the top presentation prevented family from going anywhere near the cinema halls, Trivandrum Lodge did enough and more to earn profits

Cobra secured a thunderous opening, despite being sandwiched between big releases, but lost the steam from the second week onwards. The rights amount guided the venture to financial safety.

Another film which proved that half decent multi starrers still have acceptance in Mollywood. HIG is a no profit no loss venture.

Bavutti Wins Xmas Boxoffice Battle

BAVUTTIYUDE NAMATHIL leads the battle for boxoffice supremacy, among the films released during pre-Christmas weekend. Reports suggest that despite trailing KARMAYODHA, in the initial weekend, by a good distance, Bavuttiyude Namathil marches ahead with positive reports all over the state. 

The Mammootty starrer had a decent first week of 2.60 Crores from 66 theaters in Kerala, and the second week is expected to earn another 1.75-1.80 Crores as per early estimates. Though Karmayodha did a bit better in the first week with 2.66 Crores gross, the collections have heavily imploded since day 3 for the venture. Ashiq Abu's DA THADIYA has earned good response from the viewing public, and is slowly becoming a safe venture for the makers, the first week gross being just above 2 Crores from 54 theaters.
