BOV Boxoffice Review 2013 - Week 24 - ABCD Grosses 5.05 Crores in 10 Days

RANK # 1 – ABCD

ABCD dropped 35% in the second weekend from the first, which is well above average. The first week earned a fabulous 3.65 Crores for the film. But the collections on second Monday is not very encouraging, with a drop of more than 50% from Sunday, reflecting the average opinion and the second week is expected to end near the 1.8 Crore range. ABCD is a HIT with the distributor’s share crossing 2.25 Crores in 10 days.

RANK # 2 – 5 SUNDARIKAL

5 Sundarikal opened to good reviews, but lost out huge grounds by releasing on a Saturday. The film has just one more week before Singham II releases, and then comes the Ramzan season, where the returns from Malabar normally drop by 40-50%. The first week is expected to gross 1.50-1.60 Crores.

RANK # 3 – HONEY BEE

Honey Bee had a fabulous second wek and wound it up with another 65 lakhs in the 3^rdweekend. The film holds on to 70 centers despite rain and heavy competition, thus emerging one of the more successful films of the first half of 2013.

RANK # 4 – MONEY BACK POLICY

Money Back Policy opened poor to about 25% status over the weekend. The collections have dropped big on Monday, thus leaving almost no chance for the film at the boxoffice.

RANK # 5 – LEFT RIGHT LEFT

Left Right Left’s bold content may have earned it a lot of appreciation and ravishing reviews, but the same has backfired at the boxoffice. The film has stooped into controversies and lost 30+ theaters in the second weekend to less performing films. The collections have taken a hit at the Malabar area, where it has seen the most removals, and Mollywood has lost on a sleeper hit, partly due to non-filmy reasons.

Honey Bee - 5.45 Crores Gross in 2 Weeks - Boxoffice Update

Honey Bee had a fabulous second week of 2.15 Crores Gross, lifting the 14-day gross figure to 5.45 Crores. Honey Bee registers the second best 2^nd week gross for 2013, behind Kammath & Kammath, and continues strong in the third weekend despite heavy rain.

 

Ernakulam and Calicut have been the top performers for Honey Bee. The combined two week gross is higher than the likes of Ladies & Gentleman, Immanuel, Mumbai Police, Amen and Neram. With the Ramzan season around the corner, the dearth of big releases may work in favour of Honey Bee if it can have a decent 3^rdweek.

Boxoffice Review 2013 - Week 23 - ABCD Rules Boxoffice

RANK # 1 – ABCD
 
ABCD took a magnanimous initial which can be compared to that of a Big Ms or Dileep film. The word of mouth has been Above Average to Positive. The opening day gross was 70 lakhs, and the weekends held up at the same level. Dulquar Salman takes a big step towards establishing himself as a Mass Hero.

RANK # 2 – HONEY BEE

Honey Bee held up well in the second weekend, further adding a gross of more than one crore to its kitty. The release of ABCD did hamper its collections over the weekend, but a drop of about 40% is excellent considering the impact of new releases. Asif Ali scores with a solo hit which had eluded him since 2011.

RANK # 3 – LEFT RIGHT LEFT

Left Right Left had a dull opening on Friday, with the collections improving during the weekend by 20%. But the opening was simply not good enough, earning a poor opening weekend gross. The film is muc appreciated across all the centers, but it is just another case where the word of mouth is not getting realized into ticket sales.

RANK # 4 – THANK YOU

Bad releasing strategy could have deprived Mollywood of a sleeper hit in Thank You which has received much appreciation in the limited centers it has released. Collections have been on the lower side, mainly due to the successful showing of a couple of other mass movies. Removals are expected despite good reviews this Friday.

RANK # 5 – NERAM

Neram had theatrical presence in 12 centers last weekend. With the theatrical share likely to cover up distributors premium with ease, Neram would exit the cinema halls as a Super Hit.

Honey Bee - 3.32 Crores Gross in First Week - Boxoffice Update

Honey Bee is moving towards a HIT, grossing 3.32 Crores in its first week, and holding up well in the second weekend. The drop from the first weekend is around 40% which is fabulous, considering the heavy flow of new releases, and the unfavourable weather conditions in the state. Honey Bee continues to run in 75 theaters in its second week, with minimal show reductions and shifts.

The opening week gross for Honey Bee is the 6^th highest in 2013, after Kammath & Kammath, Romans, Sound Thoma, Ladies & Gentleman and Mumbai Police. It also marks the biggest opening for Asif Ali by a good distance. Honey Bee has sustained well in the second weekend, which expected to add atleast another crore gross to its kitty, which would definitely make the film a HIT.

The film has been hit hard by ABCD at the rural single screens, with the metros providing much respite during the weekend. The distributor share crossed 1.50 Crores in the first week. The second week is set to end at 1.40 – 1.60 Crores Gross.

Verdict : Safe venture – moving towards HIT

 

BOXOFFICE VERDICTS

Left Right Left and Thank You - Dull Opening - Boxoffice Update

New releases Left Right Left and Thank You have opened to dull attendance, despite earning excellent public opinion and reviews.

Left Right Left has managed to pick up 20% on Saturday, but the opening was on the lower side, which may force holdovers in some big capacity theaters. The opening was pretty much on a poor side at around 12 lakhs on the first day. The movie has garnered unanimous positive reports from all corners, but the boxoffice tells a different story. The opening weekend shall end up just short of 50 lakhs as per the current estimates.

Thank You has also faced a situation similar to that of Left Right Left, opening at around 15% at 50 theaters. The film has grown over the weekend, but the Friday figures were well below average, which leads us to a rather poor first weekend, possibly under 35 lakhs. Even the low budget may not save the venture, unless things improve at the other end of the week. But how many screens will be movie hold then is the question.

A better release timing could have presented the industry with two sleeper hits, but now it all depends how ABCD and Honey Bee sustain during the weekdays.

Q : Who is the most bankable star in Malayalam Cinema today ?

A : Dileep. It is partially due to the fact that Dileep has stuck to the usual formula which has worked for him all these days. Openings are more or less guaranteed, if his films are marketed as full length comedies. His upcoming projects, Nadodi Mannan and the untitled project with Jose Thomas, also shall be of the same genre. It needs to be seen how Saddam Sivan performs.

A : Boxoffice status prior to 1985 is pretty much an unknown territory to today’s media and info sites. Chemeen and Angadi are sure shots to be in the list. ATBBs are predominantly decided by footfalls, ie number of people watching the movie from theatres. From information available, the ATBBs since 1985 are  Rajavinte Makan, New Delhi, Chithram, Kireedam, Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha*, Kilukkam, Manichithrathazhu, Narasimham, Meesamadhavan, Rajamanickyam, Classmates, Twenty 20, Pazhassi Raja*, Pokkiri Raja and Mayamohini. Q : Is there chance for an All Time Blockbuster in 2013 ? If yes, which film ?

A : It needs a lot factors to come together to form an ATBB. A mass opening, with a good word of mouth is indispensable. Festival season, solo release, holidays, etc also play crucial roles. Considering the above points, Dileep’s untitled project with Jose Thomas, which is announced as the big Onam release, seems to be the best bet this year. A mass initial is almost guaranteed, and it is a festival release with holidays coming in. Further the main competitor is touted to be Mohanlal’s thriller Memory Card, which is of a different genre.

ABCD Set For A Big Opening Weekend Gross - Boxoffice Update

ABCD (American Born Confused Desi) has taken a mass initial today, with almost all the major centers reporting more than 90% attendance for matinee show. ABCD is set to score heavily in the first weekend, and is expected to match the opening weekend gross of Mumbai Police and Ladies & Gentleman, or even do better.!

The word of mouth is generally positive, however, Sunday shall throw up a clear-cut verdict on the film, once the families start thronging the cinema halls. ABCD has released in 78 screens in Kerala, is expected to end up grossing in the range of 70 lakhs in the opening day.              .

Boxoffice Review - 2013 Week 22

RANK # 1 – HONEY BEE

Honey Bee makes a super strong start and secures the top position for Week 22. The initial is similar to what 3 Dots managed earlier this year, and Honey Bee has held up much better during the week days. The early estimate for the first week is around 3 Crores. Honey Bee shall face show reductions and shifts to smaller theaters this coming week, with ABCD, Left Right Left and Thank You releasing big in Kerala.

RANK # 2 – NERAM

Neram grossed 75+ lakhs in its fourth week, showing good sustainance. The fifth weekend collections have dropped around 45% from the previous weekend, mainly due to the Honey Bee juggernaut, which is also targets the same audience. Neram shall lose important centers this week, therefore not much more can be expected from here on. Neram should end up at a lifetime gross of 5.70 Crores.

RANK # 3– BHARYA ATHRA PORA

Bharya Athra Pora presents 2013 with its second family hit after Immanuel. The film was completed at a minimal budget of 2.8 Crores, and has reaped considerable benefits for Anto Joseph, with the theater share itself hitting 2.1 Crore mark.

RANK # 4– MUMBAI POLICE

Mumbai Police was expected to hit at least a Super Hit status, with 8 Crores, when the initial figures and reports came out. The mass removals at the third weekend meant that Mumbai Police would require another 2 decent weeks to be classified as even a HIT. Mumbai Police did win a lot of hearts, but lost its fizz at the boxoffice midway.

Up and Down - Mukalil Oraalundu, English, Aaru Sundarimaarude Katha, Abhiyum Njanum, all have ended up Boxoffice duds, with rather forgettable meagre collections from the theaters.

Honey Bee Opens Big - 1.7 Crore Gross in opening weekend - Boxoffice Update

Honey Bee has taken a grand opening over the first weekend of 1.70 Crores gross from 850+ shows in the state. The average attendance in the metros is a whopping 85%, with the rural areas also doing well at around 65%. The film has held up really well on Monday, with the drop being less than 20%, and looks good for a first week gross of 3.20 – 3.25 Crores.

Asif Ali makes a tremendous come back with a potential solo hit since Salt N Pepper in 2011. The film can ensure a hit status, with a gross of 4.50 – 4.75 Crores, if the collections do not go for a freefall, upon the release of ABCD and Singam II on June 14.

The release is relatively wide, with 74 theatres in Kerala, aiming to rake in the maximum before the big ones raid the theaters. Kalasangham distributes the film in Travancore, Manjunatha in Kochi, and KAS Release in Malabar area.

NERAM is a Super Hit - Grosses 5.30 Crores in 4 weeks - Boxoffice Update

 

Neram has marched its way on to Super Hit status, after it grossed approx. 70 lakhs in its fourth week from 56 theaters in the state. It is only the second film this year, to be classified a Super Hit by the trade, after Romans. The total gross from 28 days is 5.30 Crores approx, with a distributor share of 2.40 Crores. Neram's success adds to the list of profitable ventures brought to Mollywood by LJ Films.

 

Nivin Pauly grabs the spotlight once again, after the recent setbacks post Thattathin Marayathu. Nazriya has thrusted her way into the top, in the list of Mollywood heroines, and her callsheets are hot-selling properties in the market now.

 

In the forthcoming week, the movie shall face competition from Honey Bee, which has released with positive reports in 75 screens in the state. Wide removals are expected irrespective of how well Neram performs this week, as releases are galore on June 14.

 

Dulquar Salman's ABCD is set to release big, and is now ensured of a good opening, with 'Johnny Mone' song filling up the FMs and youtube. Arunkumar Aravind - Murali Gopi - Indrajith combo comes together again after the ravishing Ee Adutha Kalathu, and is expected to have its share of theaters also.

 

But the biggest impact will be made by Surya's Singam II which is ready take 120+ theaters in Kerala by storm, notably a wider release than the biggest mass Mollywood release of the year Kammath & Kammath which released in 94 theaters.

 

Neram has done its part, and done it well too. It got a couple of open weeks to rake in the moolah and have taken full toll of the same. Kudos from BOV.!

Neram continues to top the BOV Rankings this week as the new releases have been dull at the boxoffice. The third week gross for the movie was around 88 lakhs, with a drop of 60% from the first week, which is phenomenal considering the trade scenario. Neram shall continue to be strong in the theaters till Singham II hits Kerala in 120 screens on June 14th. Nivin Pauly adds a second solo success to his kitty after Thattathin Marayathu.

RANK # 2 – UP AND DOWN MUKALIL ORALUNDU

Up And Down had the chance to make a good fortune last week, had the content been accepted better by the paying public. With no big releases to compete with, when Neram and Mumbai Police were already into there 3^rd and 4^thweek respectively, Up and Down effectively had the potential to rake in atleast above a crore in 10 days, but has fallen well short.

RANK # 3 – BHARYA ATHRA PORA

Bharya Athra Pora finaly presents Jayaram with a genuine solo hit at the boxoffice after Make Up Man in early 2011. It marks a good come back for Akku Akbar whose Vellaripravinte Changathi was a boxoffice dud. Now it needs to be seen whether Jayaram can sustain this momentum with Joshiy’s Kashmir. Or will Shaji Kailas finally release Ginger, which has been in the box for a while now ? We may need to wait and see.!

RANK # 4 – MUMBAI POLICE

Mumbai Police continues to collect well in the metros, but has been severely let down at the rural single screens. The film had a tremendous first two weeks, but has bitten the dust over the past 15 days, which at a point hampered even the chance of the film being classified a HIT. Mumbai Police may have just enough bullets to cross over the line.

RANK # 5 – ENGLISH

Shyamaprasad’s English opened to good word of mouth. But how often have we seen the same not getting turned into ticket sales. English holds it head high with movie content, but will not have a considerable impact at the collection points.
