Boxoffice Review - 2013 Week 38 - Sringaravelan Drops, But Still Top

Rank # 1 - Sringaravelan

Sringaravelan had taken an earth shattering opening, the second highest of the year, but failed to hold up well after the Onam vacations. The collections dropped around 55% towards the end of week two, which is more than the normal trend in the industry. It needs to be seen whether Sringaravelan can sustain well enough to cross Romans, to become the highest grosser of 2013 by the end of fourth week.
Gross : 9.38 Crores (16 days)
Verdict : Super Hit

Rank # 2 - Daivathinte Swantham Cleetus

Mammooty strikes back big time, as Daivanthinte Swantham Cleetus emerges a HIT. The film grossed 2.5 Crores in its second week, as the Sringaravelan juggernaut dropped significantly, and shall in all probabilities end up Mammootty's highest grossing solo film in the last 3 years overtaking Immanuel.
Gross : 7.04 Crores (18 days)
Verdict : Hit

Rank # 3 - North 24 Katham

Fahad Faasil continues to earn rave reviews for is performances without notable boxoffice success. North 24 Katham is the latest to the list. 2.78 Gross in 15 days would mean that the venture would end up as an average grosser in the final analysis.
Gross : 2.78 Crores (15 days)
Verdict : Average

Rank # 4 - Zachariyayude Garbhinikal

Zachariyayude Garbhinikal received a rather luke warm opening but things have improved over the weekend due to above average word of mouth. A more clear picture would be available by the end of first week, where the film heads to.

Gross : 0.46 Crores (3 days)
Verdict : Poor Opening

Rank #5 - Pullipulikalum Aatinkuttiyum

Pullipikal continues to march ahead through the Onam season, and is utilising well the long run despite the rush of other festival biggies.

Gross : 8.26 Crores (52 days)
Verdict : Hit

Sringaravelan Opening Week Gross - 5.64 Crores (6 Days) - Second Highest of 2013

Sringaravelan grosses 5.64 Crores in the 6-day opening week, thus making it the second biggest opener of the year behind Kammath & Kammath. The film, which released on Saturday, had an above average opening, considering Dileep's previous flicks, but picked up tremendously from Monday morning, with the families thronging the theaters.

The metros are showing a tremendous trend, and are looking good for a long run despite the mixed word of mouth. Sringaravelan's best business has come from Calicut, Trichur and Kottayam. Ernakulam and Trivandrum occupancies have been excellent, but could have done better with higher capacity theaters in the first week. If the week days can hold up reasonably well, Sringaravelan is looking a lifetime gross of 12-13 Crores, and shall emerge as a Super Hit.

Sringaravelan emerges the Onam Boxoffice winner within a week of release. The satellite rights have been bagged by Asianet for 4.85 Crores.

Gross : 5.64 Crores (6 Days)
Verdict : Fantastic Opening

Sringaravelan Set For a Huge Opening Week, Cleetus Picks Up - Mollywood Onam Boxoffice

Sringaravelan is all set to score big, with a gross in the range of 5 - 5.25 Crores in its 6-day opening week from 85+ centers in Kerala. The trend has been upwards, since Monday morning, when the Onam releases were expected to gain momentum, as has been the case in recent years. The opening day, though was much lower than Sound Thoma, at about 75 lakhs approx., but with the upward trend and the vacation on the run, Sringaravelan is expected to finish its first 3 days above Sound Thoma and Romans. A 5.25-Crore opening week would be the second highest of the year behind Kammath & Kammath.

Daivathinte Swantham Cleetus had a rather average opening on Thursday, but has grown about 30% over the weekend, and further 20% on Monday. The extended opening weekend ended on a high, and the upward trend on Monday hints at an 8-day first week gross of 3.50 - 3.70 Crores, which would be higher than what Thappana grossed last year, or Immanuel managed earlier this year for Vishu.

North 24 Katham had a below average opening with rave reviews. The BO performance of the movie depends on how it can pick up after the initial 2 weeks, when the leaders start dropping pace.

Onam Biggies set to invade the Mollywood Boxoffice - Daivathinte Swantham Cleetus vs Sringaravelan

Its once again Mammooty vs Dileep at the Mollywod boxoffice for this Onam.

Megastar Mammootty's Daivanthinte Swantham Cleetus opened to average attendance across 72 theaters, garnering above average reviews. Heavy rains did affect the opening to an extent, and the collections picked up by Friday evening. The extended 4-day opening weekend seems to end in the range of 1.90 - 2.00 Crores, provided the positive opinion among the families do get materialized into collections.

Dileep's Sringaravelan opened today (Saturday) to above average attendance, with collections improving over the day. The word of mouth is average, but reported to be better than Mr Marumakan and Sound Thoma. And with the advent of vacations, the 6-day opening week looks at a minimum of 4-4.25 Crores.

D-Company fell flat on the opening day, with a luke-warm response. The future does not look too great for the venture now, as both Cleetus and Sringaravelan have earned 'watchable' opinions. It would be an achievement for D Company to gross 2 Crores in its opening week.

North 24 Katham and Ezhamathey Varavu are the dark horses for this Onam, whose BO performance solely depends on the word of mouth. Fahad badly needs a hit, as his frequent releases after Amen, has not brought any BO success to him. Ezhamathey Varavu marks the comeback of Hariharan-MT combo after the ATBB Pazhassiraja. EV does not have the star studded cast or the high production cost tag, therefore the opening may not be substantial, but definitely has the potential to grow if the audience appreciation falls in place.

Boxoffice Review - 2013 Week 36 - The Wait for the Onam Biggies, Kunjananthan Drops

RANK # 1 – KUNJANANTHANTE KADA
Kunjananthante Kada remains the numero uno in BOV review for Week 36, despite suffering severe drop in collections. The movie is much appreciated and has earned rave reviews from the critics and the paying public alike, but how often have we seen the same not being reflected in the boxoffice performance of the film.! The 10 day gross figure seems to be at around 80% of its lifetime gross. Not much can be expected with the Onam Biggies coming in thick and fast. The venture may break even due to the shoe string budget, and give the makers what they want. But money-wise, Kunjananthan is a non-performer at the BO.
Gross : 1.75 Crores (10 Days)
Verdict : FLOP

RANK # 2 – MEMORIES
Memories becomes one of the more successful movies of the year, and if BO performance is taken as the sole crtieria, it can be labelled Prithviraj’s biggest hit since Indian Ruppee, and his highest grossing solo film. Kudos to Jeethu Joseph for marking his name in the list of genuine hit makers in Mollywood.
Gross : 7.56 Crores (31 Days)
Verdict : HIT

RANK # 3 – KALIMANNU

Kalimannu struggles big time to maintain any sort of momentum going into the Onam weekend. The film screened in 25 theaters in its third week and shall be almost wiped out next week. The wide release and pre-release controversy helped Kalimannu reach a half-decent gross, else the boxoffice reception was much below average.
Gross : 2.14 Crores (17 Days)
Verdict : BELOW AVERAGE

RANK # 4 – PULLIPULIKALUM AATINKUTTIYUM
PPAK continued to slide in week 4, and had to surrender its Ramzan leader position to a surging Memories. Nevertheless, the film shall find its place in amongst the list of notable BO performers at the year end analysis, but never reached the initial expectations, falling short atleast a couple of crores.
Gross : 7.36 Crores (31 Days)
Verdict : HIT

Arikil Oral and Artist proved to be washouts, and the newcomer of the previous week Blackberry never managed to find its ground, thus proving to be a Disaster.

Boxoffice Review - 2013 Week 35 - Kunjananthante Kada Opens Average, Memories Still Strong

RANK # 1 – KUNJANANTHANTE KADA

Kunjananthante Kada took an unexpectedly decent opening considering its genre, and the lack of pre release hype around it. Friday morning was pretty average, but the film picked up well over the weekend to put on a good first weekend figure. The first week looks at around 1.75 – 2 Crores, but the fast approaching Onam releases shall ensure that Kunjananthan ends its run in major centers in 3 weeks.
Gross : 0.83 Crores (3 Days)
Verdict : AVERAGE OPENING

RANK # 2 – MEMORIES

Memories continues to score well at the metros and is a clear HIT, with it expected to retain atleast 45 centers in its fifth week. The trend looks good for a lifetime gross of 7.75 – 8 Crores, and shall see the Onam season through in atleast 10 centers.
Gross : 6.74 Crores (24 Days)
Verdict : HIT

RANK # 3 – KALIMANNU

Kalimannu has lost its initial fizz and saw considerable removals at the second weekend. The word of mouth has been good among family audience, which gives it a glimmer of hope. Kalimannu is definite to make table profits for the producers, but is expected to settle as a below average grosser.
Gross : 1.89 Crores (10 Days)
Verdict : BELOW AVERAGE

RANK # 4 – PULLIPULIKALUM AATINKUTTIYUM

PPAK had an average 3rd week, but continues to be the overall leader among the Ramzan releases. The long run of the movie expected to be hampered by Onam releases, which shall in effect take over the Mollywood boxoffice from September 5th onwards. PPAK presents Lal Jose with his fourth consecutive hit after Diamond Necklace, Aayalum Njanum Thammil and Immanuel.
Gross : 7.11 Crores (24 Days)
Verdict : HIT

RANK # 5 – ARIKIL ORAL

A damp opening for Arikil Oral means not much of a hope at the boxoffice. Removals are around the corner.
Gross : 0.24 Crores approx. (3 Days)
Verdict : DISASTER

Jumat, 30 Agustus 2013

Boxoffice Review - 2013 Week 34 - Kalimmanu Opens Average, Memories and Pullipuli HIT

RANK # 1 – KALIMANNU

Kalimannu opened in 75 screens to above average attendance from Friday evening. The film seems to have benefitted from the controversies which it finds to be embraced in. The wide release may secure it a decent initial, but the word of mouth suggests an average first week and not much from there on.

Gross : 1.12 Crores (3 Days)
Verdict : Average Opening

RANK # 2 – MEMORIES

Memories has outpaced its Ramzan competitors big time in its 3rd weekend, and the multiplexes showed better status than the new release Kalimannu. The movie shall in all possibilities become the highest grosser for Prithviraj this year, toppling the 6.42 Crores of Mumbai Police. If Memories can surge ahead with the momentum, even the 7 Crore gross of Grandmaster looks touchable.

Gross : 5.84 Crores (17 Days)
Verdict : HIT

RANK # 3 – PULLIPULIKALUM AATINKUTTIYUM

Pullipulikalum Aatinkuttiyum may have dropped a place, but is still strong with a 65+ theaters in the 3rd week. The film is definite financial success, with the distributor share approaching the 3 Crore mark.

Gross : 6.43 Crores (17 Days)
Verdict : HIT

RANK # 4 – NEELAKASHAM PACHAKADAL CHUVANNA BHOOMI

NPCB had an average third weekend of 28 lacs, with the total distributor share crossing the 2 Crore mark. The BO performance is appluadible for road movie, but the reasonably high cost of production may reprieve it of a clean HIT status. But NPCB shows that even experimental ventures can break even in Mollywood , if made well.

Gross : 4.62 Crores (17 Days)
Verdict : ABOVE AVERAGE

RANK # 5 – OLIPPORU

Olipporu misfired big time, as confessed by the lead actor, Fahad, and proves to a complete washout. It would be miracle to see this entry in next week’s BOV Boxoffice Review.

Gross : 0.20 Crores approx. (3 Days)
Verdict : DISASTER

Kamis, 22 Agustus 2013

Boxoffice Review - 2013 Week 33 - Pullipuli Leads, Memories Picks up, NPCB steady, Mathukutty washed out

RANK # 1 - Pullipulikalum Aatinkuttiyum

PPAK proves to be the boxoffice leader at Ramzan 2013 Mollywood season, with steady collections at rural small centers. The response at the metros has been below average due to the mixed word of mouth, but the late releases meant that PPAK would play atleast 25% more shows than the other movies over the weekend, and would end up the leader by a good margin.

Gross : 5.12 Crores (10 days)
Verdict : HIT

RANK # 2 - Memories

Memories ruled the metros and multiplexes over the weekend, amassing a gross figure almost equal to that of PPAK inspite of a much lower release count. Memories was easily the preferred choice for families despite being a thriller, and looks at a lifetime gross in the range of 7 - 7.25 Crores, higher than Mumbai Police and Grandmaster.

Gross : 4.16 Crores (10 days)
Verdict : HIT

RANK # 3 - Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi

NPCB had a decent second weekend, but well below the expectations considering the initial which it managed in the first 3 days. The film is slowly settling down to an above average category, and may face removals from rural single screens once the youth audience dry up. The metros and multiplexes are providing respite for this road movie which has already recovered its cost.

Gross : 3.91 Crores
Verdict : Above Average

RANK # 4 - Kadal Kadannu Oru Mathukkutty

KKOM proves to be a wash out losing out much of the screen space to its competitors by the end of first week itself. Even the independence day holiday, or the weekend could not improve the situation and KKOM is looking at a lifetime gross around 3.25 Crores at the maximum.

Gross : 2.80 Crores
Verdict : Flop

Thalaivaa dropped around 50% in the second weekend after a tremendous first week of 5.35 Gross. The final BO figure from Kerala is expected to be around 8 - 8.5 Crores, the same range as Singam II. Chennai Express proves to be the best bollywood performer in Kerala for 2013 overcoming Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, with a 10 day gross expected in the range of 3.5 Crores approx.

With Kalimannu releasing in 80 theaters on 22 Aug, KKOM and Chennai Express are expected to be washed out. Thalaivaa and NPCB may lose steam, with Memories expected to hold up the best amongst the lot.

Neelakasham Pachakadal Grosses 2.86 Crores in first week - Ramzan Boxoffice Opening Update

Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi had a good opening week of 2.86 Crores from 53 theaters in Kerala. The film has shrugged off a slight drop over the weekdays, and picked up well over the weekend and the second Monday, with late releases. The cost of production is reported as 5.5 Crores, a bit on the higher side considering the release count. A good second weekend shall see the venture break even.

Meanwhile, Pullipulikalum Aatinkuttiyum and Memories dominated the rural screens and multiplexes respectively in the first week. Though, the mixed word of mouth caused Pullipulikalum Aatinkuttiyum end the opening week a bit lower than the initial expectations at 3.69 Crores. The film performed well on the independence day holiday and had an above average second weekend. It needs to be seen how the late releases propel the movie forward in the second week.

Memories maintained its momentum to finish at 2.73 Crores, with shifts to bigger screens and additional releases. While the rural screens may see drops in the second week, the strong trends at metros shall see the film break even in the second week.

Kadal Kadannoru Mathukutty grossed 2.61 Crores from initial 8 days, and seems likely to be a wash out within three weeks of theatrical run. The opening day was good without any competition, but the collections since the first monday have been rather forgettable, despite an average word of mouth.

The 2013 Ramzan has been a succesful one for the trade in general with three out of four releases being accepted by the audience, inspite of the rush of other language films. Memories has dominated Trivandrum, Ernakulam and Thrissur. NPCB has performed its best at Calicut, Kasargod and other northern districts apart from multiplexes, while PPAK had no competitor in rural areas like Kodungallur.

Memories and Pullipulikalum Aatinkuttiyum lead Ramzan Boxoffice

Memories and Pullipulikalum Aatinkuttiyum have clearly become the top runners in the 2013 Ramzan Mollywood Boxoffice after ammassing houseful shows all over the state on the Independence day holiday. Both the films can be termed as clear hits unless they face drastic drops on Friday, which is highly improbable considering that there are no high profile releases other than Bharath's 555 which should not be a threat to either of the these films.

Pullipulikalum Aatinkuttiyum has stormed its way to one of the biggest openers for Lal Jose, despite bottle neck competition. The movie has garnered tremendous response from family audiences, who were literally left with no other choice, as Kadal Kadannu Oru Mathukkutty dropped from Monday. The film is expected to end the opening week as the numero uno with a gross around 4 Crores, and shall cruise into the second week without much removals.

Memories was touted as the dark house for this year's Ramzan, and has punched much above its weight. The movie's acceptance was embarked with tremendous response in the metros. Memories has not ruled the rural areas, but the BO performance has been much better than other recent thrillers. Memories clearly dominated the multiplexes on Thursday, and shall in all probabilities finish the week at the second position with a gross around 2.70 - 2.80 Crores.

Neelakasham Pachakkadal Chuvanna Bhoomi has slowed down a bit, with the other movies picking up. The movie did make money on the holiday at the metros and multiplexes, but the rural BO left much more to be desired. It is still looking at a good first week total of around 2.50 Crores, which should be decent considering its genre, but will have to settle for a third spot.

Kadal Kadannu Oru Mathukutty shall end up as one of the notable BO failures for Renjith in the recent times. KKOM has struggled to keep pace with the competitiors and has lost quite a few critical show spaces a bit too early. Shifts to lower capacity theaters, and wide removals leave the movie with not much chance at the BO going forward.

Boxoffice Review - 2013 Week 32 - Mollywood Ramzan Boxoffice Battle

Rank 1 – Pullipulikalum Aatinkuttiyum

With an opening weekend gross of 2.10 Crores, Pullipulikalum Aatinkuttiyum made a strong start at the boxoffice, with a considerable lead. The trend across the weekend was good, but there were some concerning signs at the rural centers on Monday. A more clear picture shall be available on the second Friday as to where the collections are going towards.

Gross : 2.10 Crores (3 days)
Verdict : Solid Opening

Rank 2 – Neelakasham Pachakkadal Chuvanna Bhoomi

Though it seems to have lost out on a good figure due to the release count, NCPB has scored well with the limited release, due to the outstanding response. It has held up well at the metros on Monday, and needs to be seen how far it can match with Pullipulikalum Aatinkuttiyum in rural centers.

Gross : 1.57 Crores (3 days)
Verdict : Good Opening

Rank 3 – Kadal Kadannu Oru Mathukutty

KKOM disappointed at the boxoffice over the weekend after an excellent solo start on Thursday. The weekday status has been poor in general which is a worrying sign going forward, coupled with reduced number of shows in major centers. With the other films catching up on good word of mouth, Mathukutty is expected to struggle to keep pace.

Gross : 2.05 Crores (4 days)
Verdict : Above Average Opening - Losing Steam.

Rank 4 - Memories

Being the most appreciated movie amongst the Ramzan releases, Memories has picked up remarkably well after a slow start. Monday reported more than a dozen housefull shows across the state in the evening, which is tremendous sign. Memories shall be the first one to be declared a HIT, if it can hold up well through the week.

Gross : 1.18 Crores
Verdict : Average Opening – Picking up well.

Thalaivaa made a tremendous initial in the state of 2.27 Crores in 3 days. The movie carries a below average opening in general which may pave way for the Malayalam releases to do better than expected. Chennai Express also made a decent opening of approx. 1.50 Crores. The film has already lost its fizz due to poor audience appreciation, but is expected to continue in theaters for another week atleast, due to the glitz and glamour.

Big Bang Ramzan Battle at the Mollywood Boxoffice.!

As the holy Ramzan season comes to a close, the Mollywood is geared up for a mouth watering clash at the boxoffice. The distributors are still in hunt for their preferred theaters, and the exhibitors are keeping their fingers crossed that they do get the best bet among lot to exhibit and cash in the money, before another set of biggies release in September for Onam. All in all, Mollywood is going to be a happening place here on till December.

The first entrant is Samir Tahir's Neelakasham Pachakkadal Chuvanna Bhoomi, releasing on 8th August, before Eid. Dulquar Salman is on a roll after ABCD, and it needs to be seen whether he has the star power to carry a good film on his shoulders despite the bottle neck competition for this Ramzan. Sunny Wayne appears in a ntable venture after the successful Nee Ko Njaa Cha. Will this turn out to be ultimate litmus test for Dulquar ?

Mammootty looks to take his successful 2013, to a whole new level, with Kadal Kadannoru Mathukutty. The brand Ranjith sells like hot cake in Mollywood, and the film has already earned a whopping amount against satellite rights. The film is expected to take a brilliant opening, and if the content is half as good as Pranchiyettan, Mathukutty will end up a Hit.

Lal Jose is aiming for his fourth successive hit with Pullipulikalum Aatinkuttiyum. Kunchako Boban needs to get out of the hole which he finds himself this year, after 3 Dots and God For Sale, had bombed heavily. The families shall definitely prefer a light hearted Lal Jose film, and there lies the hope for success for this venture. Normally Lal Jose films score heavily in the long run, which will be missed this time around with a galore of releases coming up, unless an extra ordinary word of mouth is secured.

Prithviraj stars in Jeethu Joseph's fourth directorial venture - Memories. It is notable that Memories has won some key big capacity theaters in metros, which may play an important role in getting it a much needed initial, though the trailers and songs do not suggest that it is a mass film dependant on the initial pull. Unless the content is fabulous, Memories may find its way ahead tough.

The King of Festival Releases comes 2 weeks late this time around, which is a bit absurd. Dileep's track record with mass festival releases have been impeccable and unmatched in the last 5 years, which leads us to the question why Nadodimannan is pushed 2 weeks back to a late release of September 23rd, and that too with his Onam flick Sringaravelan scheduled just weeks later. The industry is not as big to accommodate to 2 mass films from the same actor at the same time, which leaves Nadodimannan with just 3 weeks to cash in, and shall severely impact Sringaravelan's opening. But do not be surprised if this flick ends up the winner after all.!

Kadal Kadannoru Mathukutty Secures Record Satellite Rights - 5.75 Crores

Kadal Kadannoru Mathukkutty creates a new record for Satellite Rights in Malayalam industry by going under the hammer for a record figure of 5.75 Crores to a leading Malayalam Channel, rumoured to be Asianet. The record was previously held by Kammath & Kammath at 4.90 Crores secured by Mazhavil Manorama earlier during the year. This also ensures that the Ranjith directed film, produced by August Cinemas has attained break even, well before its theatrical release on August 9th.

2013 has seen a robust boost in the trend at which satellite rights are being secured by channels. 2010 had seen a dip in the demand for the rights amongst the channels, but with Mazhavil Manorama entering the race and the Sun Network re-adopting a aggressive strategy, the rates have soared up to sky level, which indirectly shall increase the pay for the leading stars, and the general cost of producing the film.

This year, apart from Kammath, Ladies & Gentleman and Sound Thoma have made big bucks from satellite rights, by raking in 4.80 and 4.70 Crores respectively. The rumour that ABCD got sold for approx. 2.70 Crores, bears testimony to the rise of Dulquar Salman to stardom in Mollywood.

But the question remains as to whether Kadal Kadannoru Mathukutty will be labelled a HIT, if it proves to be a washout with a life time gross of less than 3 Crores ? If mere table profits are considered, almost 75% of the films starring the Big M's, Dileep, and to a lesser extent, Prithviraj and Kunchako Boban are successful ventures.

Film Industry remains a business after all, and the producer is not merely dependant on the share from the theaters, or the outright price for which he sells the rights to distribute to a distributor. Apart from satellite rights, overseas distribution, Audio/DVD rights, and Remake rights, add to the revenue. So, if the producer recovers the cost, the film is 'Profitable', but unless it does business at the theatres, proportionate to its cost of production and distribution, it is never a HIT. This is precisely why, Sound Thoma is a HIT, Ladies & Gentleman is a FLOP, and Kadal Kadannoru Mathukutty is 'profitable' but not yet a HIT,

Singham II grosses 6.70 Crores from Kerala - Boxoffice Update

Suriya's Singham II has raked in 6.70 Crores from 17 days at the Mollywood Boxoffice. The film earned a mammoth initial in the first weekend from 142 theatres, and grossed 4.90 from the opening week, but dropped to 62 theatres in its second week, which was more or less expected considering the high number of extra theatres, and the mixed word of mouth.

Singham II has fallen well short of the two-week gross of 7.35 Crores registered by Vijay's Thuppakki in late 2012. The life time gross of Thuppakki from Kerala stood at a whopping 10.70 Crores, and chances are low that Singham II would cross the 8 Crores mark considering the number of high profile releases for Ramzan, and shall end up a losing venture for its distributors in Kerala who had a huge premium for the film.

A large number of Singham II's theatres have already been taken over by Dhanush's Mariyan which is also expected to take a decent opening from 70+ theatres in the state. Honey Bee and ABCD also have managed to make comebacks at rural centers.

Honey Bee emerges the most profitable movie of 2013 till now, with a 9.15 Crores from 45 days from Kerala. The film continues strong in 27 theatres in its 7th week, a feat achieved by only two other films this year - Romans and Sound Thoma.

The distributor share has crossed 4.25 Crores, and the satellite rights of the movie has been bagged by Asianet for 2.55 Crores. Honey Bee has raked in impressed figures from overseas too, despite a late release at the Middle East sector proving to be a bit costly. The music by Deepak Dev has been chartbuster stuff from day one.

In the final verdict, Honey Bee is expected to earn a margin of 4.50+ Crores from all sources, which is fabulous feat in Mollywood today.

Verdict : Super Hit

5 Sundarikal fails to hold up - 2.65 Crores Gross in 16 Days - Below Average

Amal Neerad's initial venture as a producer fails to hold up well in the second week, with a week-to-week drop of 65%. The second week ended at 65 lakhs gross, adding up the to the 1.90 Crores raked in during the opening week. The film garnered generally positive opinion, but has not realized them into collections at the counters.

5 Sundarikal lost out 40 theaters to the new releases, mainly Singham II during its third weekend. The third Monday had a pathetic status of 15% and things do not look great for the film which is expected to be washed out by the end of next week from the theaters. The outright failure of God for Sale, Buddy, Tourist Home and Mizhi may provide some respite for 5 Sundarikal, but the trend does not look good for a lifetime gross above 3 Crores.

Gross : 2.65 Crores
Verdict : Below Average

Honey Bee crosses 8 Crores Gross - Boxoffice Update

Debutant director Jean Paul Lal strikes gold at the first aim, as Honey Bee is declared a sure shot Super Hit by the trade. The 31 day gross for the movie from 7000+ shows has crossed the 8 Crores mark, with the distributor share standing at a whopping 3.65 Crores mark. Honey Bee is the fourth film in 2013 to cross 8 Crores, behind Romans, Kammath & Kammath and Sound Thoma.

Honey Bee has been struck hard in its 6th week by the mammoth release and success of Singham II in 120+ theaters in Kerala. Comebacks are expected once Singham walks out of the extra theaters, as the new releases Buddy and Tourist Home have bombed in the opening weekend itself.

The movie looks at a lifetime gross in the range of 9 Crores, as no further big releases are expected till Eid, when Thalaivaa and Chennai Express would invade the theaters in Kerala.

Gross : 8 Crores
Verdict : Super Duper Hit.!

Boxoffice Verdicts - 2013 Mollywood Boxoffice Half Yearly Report

It is that time of the year when the trade analysts and boxoffice followers are eager to appraise how the industry has performed during the first half of the year. Here comes BOV with its trademark half yearly report for 2013.

Out of a total of 85 releases, 13 films have managed to break even, 10 films were Flops, and all the other 62 films were declared Boxoffice Disasters. 2013 is yet to present Mollywood with an outright Blockbuster, but has produced 2 Super Hits and 8 Hits till now.

SUPER HITS

ROMANS is the run-away winner of the year till now with a life time gross of 10.94 Crores, which is yet to be surpassed this year. The film ran for 50+ days in 29 theaters, and was declared a Super Hit within 3 weeks of release.

The dark horse of the first half has been Alphonse Puthren's bilingual starring Nivin Pauly - NERAM. The film made in a shoestring budget raked in 5.85 Crores and is the second most profitable movie of the first half.

HITS

KAMMATH & KAMMATH
Gross : 10.34 Crores
The multi-starrer secured a thunderous initial as expected and cashed in on the wide release. Though the mixed opinion caused wide removals from the 4th week, the film had grossed enough to be declared a clean hit.

SOUND THOMA
Gross : 10.13 Crores
Dileep continued to stamp his authority over Mollywood Boxoffice with the stupendous success of SOUND THOMA. The film gave director Vyshakh his fourth consecutive hit.

IMMANUEL
Gross : 7.34 Crores
The Lal Jose family entertainer carried the best word of mouth among the Vishu releases and finished with the highest solo film gross for a Mammootty starrer after Best Actor in 2010.

HONEY BEE
Gross : 7.19 Crores (24 Days)
Honey Bee went on a roll amongst the youth audience, and held up big time to secure the second solo success for Asif Ali after Salt N Pepper. The potential Super Hit shall in all probabilities, end up with a lifetime gross of 8.50 - 9 Crores.

ABCD
Gross : 6.45 Crores (17 Days)
ABCD marked Dulquar Salman's arrival as a Mass Hero who can pull off a commercial movie on his shoulders. The film managed to open big and continued to perform well despite heavy rains.

The other movies which were declared a HIT by the trade are MUMBAI POLICE (6.42 Crores), BHARYA ATHRA PORA (4.83 Crores) and CELLULOID (4.57 Crores). AMEN (5.47 Crores) had a stupendous run at the boxoffice, but finally ended up in the  ABOVE AVERAGE category, due to the high cost of production. DRACULA (2.85 Crores) and NEE KO NJA CHAA (2.35 Crores) were the other film which managed to break even.

The notable failures of the year are LADIES & GENTLEMAN, 3 DOTS, RED WINE and HOTEL CALIFORNIA.

ABCD marches on at the boxoffice - 6.45 Crores in 17 days - Boxoffice Update

ABCD continues to hold up extremely well despite the heavy rains. The distributor share has surpassed many other successful movies of the year like Mumbai Police, Neram and Amen.  The weekdays are expected to add another 40 lacs to its kitty. The film looks at a lifetime gross of 8-8.50 Crores depending on how much it can fend off the challenge from Singam II this weekend. If ABCD can manage a reasonable number of comebacks at the extra theatres where Singam II released, it looks at a free run for another 3-4 weeks due to the lack of big new releases during Ramzan.

Gross : 6.45 Crores (17 days)
Verdict : HIT

BOV Boxoffice Review 2013 - Week 24 - ABCD Grosses 5.05 Crores in 10 Days

RANK # 1 – ABCD

ABCD dropped 35% in the second weekend from the first, which is well above average. The first week earned a fabulous 3.65 Crores for the film. But the collections on second Monday is not very encouraging, with a drop of more than 50% from Sunday, reflecting the average opinion and the second week is expected to end near the 1.8 Crore range. ABCD is a HIT with the distributor’s share crossing 2.25 Crores in 10 days.
Gross : 5.05 Crores (10 Days)
Verdict : HIT

RANK # 2 – 5 SUNDARIKAL

5 Sundarikal opened to good reviews, but lost out huge grounds by releasing on a Saturday. The film has just one more week before Singham II releases, and then comes the Ramzan season, where the returns from Malabar normally drop by 40-50%. The first week is expected to gross 1.50-1.60 Crores.
Gross : 0.70 Crores (2 Days)
Verdict : AVERAGE OPENING

RANK # 3 – HONEY BEE

Honey Bee had a fabulous second wek and wound it up with another 65 lakhs in the 3rdweekend. The film holds on to 70 centers despite rain and heavy competition, thus emerging one of the more successful films of the first half of 2013.
Gross : 6.12 Crores (17 Days)
Verdict : HIT

RANK # 4 – MONEY BACK POLICY

Money Back Policy opened poor to about 25% status over the weekend. The collections have dropped big on Monday, thus leaving almost no chance for the film at the boxoffice.
Gross : 0.39 Crores (3 Days)
Verdict : POOR OPENING

RANK # 5 – LEFT RIGHT LEFT

Left Right Left’s bold content may have earned it a lot of appreciation and ravishing reviews, but the same has backfired at the boxoffice. The film has stooped into controversies and lost 30+ theaters in the second weekend to less performing films. The collections have taken a hit at the Malabar area, where it has seen the most removals, and Mollywood has lost on a sleeper hit, partly due to non-filmy reasons.
Gross : 1.13 Crores (10 Days)
Verdict : FLOP

Honey Bee - 5.45 Crores Gross in 2 Weeks - Boxoffice Update

Honey Bee had a fabulous second week of 2.15 Crores Gross, lifting the 14-day gross figure to 5.45 Crores. Honey Bee registers the second best 2nd week gross for 2013, behind Kammath & Kammath, and continues strong in the third weekend despite heavy rain.

Ernakulam and Calicut have been the top performers for Honey Bee. The combined two week gross is higher than the likes of Ladies & Gentleman, Immanuel, Mumbai Police, Amen and Neram. With the Ramzan season around the corner, the dearth of big releases may work in favour of Honey Bee if it can have a decent 3rdweek.

Verdict : HIT

Boxoffice Review 2013 - Week 23 - ABCD Rules Boxoffice

RANK # 1 – ABCD

ABCD took a magnanimous initial which can be compared to that of a Big Ms or Dileep film. The word of mouth has been Above Average to Positive. The opening day gross was 70 lakhs, and the weekends held up at the same level. Dulquar Salman takes a big step towards establishing himself as a Mass Hero.
Gross : 2.15 Crores (3 Days)
Verdict : MASS OPENING

RANK # 2 – HONEY BEE

Honey Bee held up well in the second weekend, further adding a gross of more than one crore to its kitty. The release of ABCD did hamper its collections over the weekend, but a drop of about 40% is excellent considering the impact of new releases. Asif Ali scores with a solo hit which had eluded him since 2011.
Gross : 4.39 Crores (10 Days)
Verdict : HIT

RANK # 3 – LEFT RIGHT LEFT

Left Right Left had a dull opening on Friday, with the collections improving during the weekend by 20%. But the opening was simply not good enough, earning a poor opening weekend gross. The film is muc appreciated across all the centers, but it is just another case where the word of mouth is not getting realized into ticket sales.
Gross : 0.48 Crores (3 Days)
Verdict : DULL OPENING

RANK # 4 – THANK YOU

Bad releasing strategy could have deprived Mollywood of a sleeper hit in Thank You which has received much appreciation in the limited centers it has released. Collections have been on the lower side, mainly due to the successful showing of a couple of other mass movies. Removals are expected despite good reviews this Friday.
Gross : 0.26 Crores (3 Days)
Verdict : POOR OPENING

RANK # 5 – NERAM

Neram had theatrical presence in 12 centers last weekend. With the theatrical share likely to cover up distributors premium with ease, Neram would exit the cinema halls as a Super Hit.
Gross : 5.75 Crores (38 Days)
Verdict : SUPER HIT
