Husbands in Goa takes an excellent opening at Kerala Boxoffice, continuing to prove that multi-starrers are guaranteed an initial. The word of mouth is average, as it is for such comedy capers.

RANK # 2 - TRIVANDRUM LODGE

Trivandrum lodge brings the successful combo of   VK Prakash - Anoop Menon - Jayasurya back on screen. The movie carried a hype around, despite not boasting a star studded line up.

Verdict : Good Opening

RANK # 3 - RUN BABBY RUN

Run Babby Run continues its juggernaut in its fourth weekend. The movie has overtaken the collections of Thattathin Marayathu and is marching is way to a Blockbuster.

RANK # 4 - MOLLY AUNTY ROCKS

Molly Aunty Rocks has failed to pick up it collections, to retain the main centers. Vast removals may haunt the film in the long run, but the makers shall not incur heavy losses, due to the stringent budget.

RANK # 5 - MR MARUMAKAN

Mr Marumakan may not have reproduced the Mayamohini magic, but has earned sufficient footfalls to earn normal profits to the distributors. The film still retains a good number of theaters in its 6th week

Q : Can Mayamohini be considered as an All Time Blockbuster considering the profits which it made ? 

A : Yes. Mayamohini is an ATBB, but not on the basis of profits. A film can become profitable even before release. But unlike Hits or Super Hits or even Blockbusters, All Time Blockbusters earn their name from theatrical collections, distributor share and the theatrical run alone, and not from profitability.

Q : Can the TV rights and Audio rights be considered for determining whether a movie is a HIT ?

A : There are people of either opinion, but BOV believes, as Cinema is a business like any other venture, the income from all the sources must be considered while determining its status. Huge rights amounts are fetched either due to the film's successful performance at the theaters, or due to the brand value associated with it. The makers deserve to reap the benefits of either of these scenarios. But however, the film should have earned reasonable profits for all, or almost all of the parties involved, in order to be classified as successful. Though 'Boxoffice' strictly means collection from theaters, we believe there is no meaning in classifying a film as an unsuccessful project, when it earns multiple times more than industry average profits, even if it is predominantly from the rights.

Q : Can you please give details about the final collection report of Diamond Necklace ? 

A : Diamond Neclace ended its Theatrical run after 119 Days with 6700+ shows in Kerala, grossing 5.30 Crores, with a share of about 2.30 Crores. The satellite rights are reportedly fetched by Surya TV for about 1.60 Crores. Joy Alukkas had given around 80 lakhs to advertise their product in the film. The movie got an excellent run overseas, though collection details are not available.

Boxoffice Review - 2012 Week 37

RANK # 1 - RUN BABBY RUN

The Joshiy directed Mohanlal starrer continues to do tremendous business in major centers. It has now become the 4th highest grossing movie of the year behind Mayamohini, Ordinary and Thattathin Marayathu. The new releases have had minimal impact on RBR's run.

Verdict : Super Hit

RANK # 2 - MOLLY AUNTY ROCKS

Molly Aunty is welcomed with average response at the theaters, and the hartal which fell on Saturday has had an impact on its opening. The film has just one open week ahead for raking in the maximum.

Gross : 0.66 Crores (3 Days)

Verdict : Average Opening

RANK # 3 - MR MARUMAKAN

Mr Marumakan has managed to bring in families to the theaters despite negative reviews. The film shall end up as an above average profit earner.

RANK # 4 - THAPPANA

Though the film had a pretty good week straight after Onam, it gives an impression that Thappana never really took off. The film is finally settling down into the above average category.

Chattakkari opened to luke warm response all over the state. The film carries extremely negative review, and removals are certainly around, as Husbands in Goa and Trivandurm lodge are gearing up for a show down this weekend.

RANK # 1 - RUN BABY RUN

Run Baby Run continues it's juggernaut in Malayalam boxoffice by following up an earth shattering opening, with yet another excellent weekend. The distributor share has crossed 4 Crores by a good margin, and the film is still super strong in all the main centers.

Verdict : Super Hit

RANK # 2 - MR MARUMAKAN ( 23 Days )

Though Mr Marumakan has recaptured its second place this week, it has found its going tough since the Onam festivity has drawn to a close. Still managing decent family crowds during evening shows, Dileep marches his way forward with another venture, which may prove to be financially profitable despite a high cost of production.

Gross : 6.71 Crores

Verdict : Above Average

RANK # 3 - THAPPANA

Thappana drops back to Number 3 this week, as the collections saw a huge dip during the weekdays. With the advent of new releases, the movie shall find itself in a vulnerable position during the coming weeks. But Thappana has grossed well enough to cover up its production costs from theaters and rights.

RANK # 4 - OZHIMURI

Ozhimuri has opened to below average audience and positive word of mouth this weekend. Though the initial is dull, the film does have a decent run ahead, if the next week releases prove to be dull.

RANK # 5 - THATTATHIN MARAYATHU

Still moving along nicely at the main centers during weekends, with repeat audience. Removals are expected with bigger films scheduled for release next week.

Boxoffice Review - 2012 Week 35

RANK # 1 - RUN BABY RUN

Run Baby Run is indeed the Run'away' Onam Winner for 2012, and that too by a good distance. The film has held up remarkably well during the week days with less than 15% fall in collections from the first weekend.

Gross : 3.95 Crores (5 Days)

Verdict : Excellent Opening

RANK # 2 - THAPPANA

Thappana held up reasonably well in its second full week,with the third Sunday showing 10 - 15% growth from the second Sunday. It has registered marginally better collections than Mr Marumakan last week.The battle for Number II is live and kicking, This week, its Thappana.

Verdict : Above Average

RANK # 3 - MR MARUMAKAN

Mr Marumakan has been hampered to an extent by smaller theaters in some of the major centers. Despite negative reviews, the film is lapped up happily by families. A bigger production cost means, a higher gross needed to break-even. Mr Marumakan also has cashed in well, during the weekend after Onam.

Verdict : Average

RANK # 4 - THATTATHIN MARAYATHU

Thattathin Marayathu magic is still super strong in the cities during weekends. But not much can be expected from here on.

RANK # 5 - FRIDAY

Despite managing to generate a favorable public opinion, Friday never kicked off at the Boxoffice. May be the release strategy could have been better, going by the fact that viewers normally prefer mass movies in the festive season.

Verdict : Flop

RUN BABY RUN takes an Earth Shattering Opening

Rub Baby Run (RBR) takes a magnanimous opening all over Kerala with positive word of mouth. The film saw the ultimate commercial combination in Mollywood, coming together for an eighth time, Mohanlal and Joshiy. RBR opened with much fanfare, and the opening day saw full houses in all the major release centers. The initial day gross is believed to be in the range of 90 Lakhs, the highest ever for a film distributed by Galaxy Films. An early estimate of the first 3 day gross is in the range of 2.50 Crores, though no official reports have set in yet.

RBR seems to be the clear winner for this Onam, going by the opening which it has taken. With no major releases scheduled for next 3 weeks, RBR is set for a brilliant run at the boxoffice. Currently, the movie looks at 6.50 - 7.00 Crores Gross in its extended first week of 9 days, and lifetime gross of 11-12 Crores.

Run Baby Run continues its juggernaut in 77 theaters in Kerala and another 60+ theaters outside the State. The final verdict shall depend on how it holds up once the festive mood settles down.

VERDICT : GRAND OPENING
