RANK # 1 - MR MARUMAKAN

The comedy-caper had an average start at the boxoffice, but held steady in its second weekend. The collections during the second week are encouraging, though it will interesting to see how it performs in the long run.

RANK # 2 - THAPPANA

The collections have picked up slightly in during the second week, but the weekends were average at best. The final verdict depends on whether Thappana can prevent losing steam in the 3rd week.

RANK # 3 - FRIDAY

Fahad's honeymoon period seems to be on the slide finally. Despite carrying above average reports, the boxoffice performance of Friday is much below expectations. Future looks dim unless new releases get rejected by viewers.

RANK # 4 - THATTATHIN MARAYATHU

The most profitable movie of the year 2012, till date, and mostly will retain that position at the year end analysis.

Yet another Shaji Kailas movie sinking without trace. Below Average content, bad release timing and a poor promotion strategy seals the fate of Simhasanam.

2012 Onam Releases Boxoffice Update

MR MARUMAKAN and THAPPANA, the major Onam releases are set to have a decent opening week, while the new generation flick FRIDAY has had a relatively dull opening, despite above average reviews.

As the early collection reports for the first week flow in, the Dileep starrer is estimated to have grossed 3.10 - 3.20 Crores in its 6-day first week run. The fact that Mr Marumakan has held up reasonably well in the major centers despite a negative word of mouth, is highly encouraging, as it is now almost sure to get a substantial collection over the weekend. Mr Marumakan would do a great job, if it can gross about 6 - 6.25 Crores before Run Baby Run releases. Considering Dileep's ability to pull in the vacation crowd, the film looks set for a decent lifetime gross, unless it gets snubbed big time by the families.

Thappana is expected to have grossed about 2.60 - 2.70 Crores in its 5-day opening week. The film has received the best word of mouth for any Mammootty film over the past 18 months, which may lead to higher number of footfalls over the weekend. The film is reported to have caught up well in the Malabar area, however a distinct picture may not be available until the coming mid-week.

FRIDAY has not lived up to its billing at the Boxoffice either. The film may still turn out to be positive if it can   make use of the relatively lackluster performance of the biggies. Success of such movies depend hugely on the public opinion and the long run which it may obtain once the festive frenzy drops.

BOXOFFICE VERDICTS

MR MARUMAKAN and THAPPANA take Above Average opening

The Big Bonanza Onam releases, Dileep's MR MARUMAKAN and Mammootty's THAPPANA have taken above average openings over the weekend. Mr Marumakan released on 18 August 2012, a day ahead of Thappana. Early estimates hint that Mr Marumakan has grossed about 1.35 Crores from 2 days, releasing in 70 theaters, and Thappana also has done well, raking in about 70 Lakhs on its opening day, from 77 theaters in Kerala. While the word of mouth for Mr Marumakan is predominantly negative, Thappana has managed a better public opinion, in fact the best for a Mammotty star in recent times, which may work in its favor in the long run.

The opening day figures are much lower than other recent releases like Spirit, Bachelor Party or Usthad Hotel. But it is perfectly justifiable as the releases took place towards the fag end of the Holy Ramzan period. The collections are expected to pick up significantly this week, as the holy season has come to an end, and the schools are about to close for Onam vacation.Both the films have just one open week in front to make use of, as Joshiy directed Mohanlal starrer RUN BABY RUN is due for a huge release in the forthcoming week.

At the moment, Mr Marumakan looks good for an opening week gross of 3.20 - 3.40 Crores, while Thappana might end the week slightly better. Though the weekdays have definitely belonged to the Mega Star's film, the second week shall decisively prove the winner out of these two. Thappana shall cash-in its positive reports, but Mr Marumakan can never be written off due to the acceptability of Dileep amongst families.A fiery battle for Boxoffice supremacy is sure on the cards this week...!

Boxoffice Review - 2012 Week 33

RANK # 1 - SIMHASANAM

Simhasanam has turned out to be damp squib at Mollywood Boxoffice. After getting a solo release in 70+ theatres, the film could not cash in the lack of competition. While the release during Ramzan season is touted to be one of the causes for the poor performance, the film could have held on if the content was accepted by the audience. Another failure for Shaji Kailas.

Verdict : DISASTER

RANK # 2 - THATTATHIN MARAYATHU

The most profitable movie of the year 2012 till date. Thattathin Marayathu has managed to double its investment pretty comfortably. The film is currently running in 25+ theatres in the state and has crossed 10000 theatrical shows.

Verdict : BLOCKBUSTER

RANK # 3 - USTHAD HOTEL

Usthad Hotel has done pretty good business of about 30 lakhs, in its 6th and 7th weeks put together, mainly in the Travancore belt. The film is huge winner and is set to establish Dulquar Salman as a bankable star for the future.

RANK # 4 - LAST BENCH

The response to Last Bench has been poor and removals are bound to happen once the Onam biggies take the center stage this week.

Cinema Company has vanished without much of trace. Even a reasonably popular 'Thikk - Rap' number could not save the film at the theatres.

SIMHASANAM has no takers - Below Average Opening - Poor Word of Mouth

SIMHASANAM had a below average initial of about 90 lakhs in the opening weekend of 3 days. While it needs to be admitted that the decision to release the movie during the Ramzan period has backfired big time, the reports suggest that the content of the movie has not helped the cause either.

The success of SIMHASANAM depended a lot on the initial which it could have secured, being released a week before the Onam biggies took the center stage. As the word of mouth is not encouraging, it has now become a foregone conclusion that huge removals can be expected on the weekend, when Friday, Mr Marumakan and Thappana are set for a grand release.

It would be a miracle if SIMHASANAM can hold up 20 theatres in its week 2. The early estimates hint at an opening week collection of 1.30 - 1.40 Crores, and not much is expected to added from there on. The movie was made a big canvas of 5.50 Crores including Print and Publicity.

VERDICT : FLOP

The Wait For The Onam Biggies

Thattathin Marayathu and Usthad Hotel held up well during the past week, in Central and Southern zones of the State, and have cashed in the benefit of having no new releases.  Thattathin Marayathu has become the Numero Uno movie of the year 2012, on the basis of profitablity. The film has gone on to gross a whopping 10.15 Crores from 29 Days, thus becoming the 3rd highest grosser of the year.

Usthad Hotel has taken its share of success over the past weeks. Though the collections took a hit due to the runaway success of Thattathin Marayathu, the movie has managed 8.41 Crores from 36 Days and still continues in 25+ theaters in its 6th week.

The trade now awaits the release of the Onam biggies for the year, and one can expect nothing short of fire works at the boxoffice during the festive season, as atleast 5 big films are awaiting release. It has been 3 years now, since Mollywood has had big Onam releases, as previously the Ramzan season has more or less overlapped with Onam, preventing the distributors to release the films during this period.

Mr Marumakan seems to be the best bet at the boxoffice, as Dileep is on a roll with Mass Comedies with the tremendous success of Mayamohini. The film is sure to take an earth shattering opening and it needs to be assumed that the families will flock in from the 2nd week, regardless of word of mouth.

Run Baby Run brings the ultimate commercial combination of Mollywood to the table, Mohanlal + Joshiy + Big Budget. RBR had the potential to break all opening records, but for the congested release schedule during the August last week.

Mammootty still continues his quest for an outright blockbuster through Johnny Antony directed Thappana. A huge opening is more or less ensured for the movie, and the golden question will be how much it can compete with the other biggies.

Friday is the Dark Horse for this Onam. This can be yet another new generation, small budget, hyperlink movie making its mark at the BO, starring Fahad Fazil and Ann Augustine, directed by Lijin Jose.

The Sultan of Action Flicks, Shaji Kailas makes a comeback with his Prithviraj starrer Simhasanam. The film marks Shaji's first attempt at scripting, and has taken a below average opening at the boxoffice, with mixed - negative reports. Simhasanam has just one open week to make hay, as it may have removals upon the release of other biggies.

RANK # 1 - THATTATHIN MARAYATHU

Thattathin Marayathu managed to hold up reasonably well in all major centers except Malabar, where the collections have dropped about 70% from Week 3. But it needs to be believed that the film has done more than enough to be declared a true Blockbuster.

The Anwar Rasheed - Dulquar Salman juggernaut has suffered badly with the advent of the holy Ramzan season. Collections have dropped heavily in Northern Kerala, while the film has held up well in the Travancore belt.

Cinema Company has opened rather poorly with the off season and relatively better performance of its competitors eating into its opening weekend. Removals are around the corner
