Karmayodha Leads Xmas Boxoffice : Opening Weekend

The Malayalam Boxoffice Opening Verdict for the 2012 Christmas weekend, favours KARMAYODHA, predominantly due to the higher number of screens and the capacity theaters in which the film is being played. The early collection estimates point at a figure of 1.65 Crores Gross in 3 days, which is more than a decent opening, considering the stiff competition in place, for this festive season. The word of mouth is Mixed - Below Average, and therefore the opening week gross shall form a lion's share in the film's lifetime gross. The film carried a huge pre-release hype, due to Mohanlal's highly impressive boxoffice record in the second half of 2012. But the collections have seen a distinct drop since the opening day, and it remains to be seen whether Karmayodha can take advantage of the holiday coming up on Tuesday.

Mammootty's BAVUTTIYUDE NAMATHIL has managed a positive response from the public, and has opened it's tally at the second place, with an estimated 3 day gross of 1.40 Crores. Going by the word of mouth, and the opening which the movie has secured, it needs to be believed that, Megastar's wait for a clean hit is finally coming to an end. It is almost sure that Bavutti would eventually end up as the Christmas winner in Malabar area. Such films grow with the word of mouth, and therefore, the coming week proves to be extremely crucial to decide the Final Verdict.

Ashiq Abu has weaved his magic once again in Kerala, as DA THADIYA has received the best appreciation among the Christmas releases. The film has not matched the big guns in release size, but shall definitely catch the leaders in the long run. The film is reported to have grossed 1.34 Crores from 54 theaters in Kerala, with the best occupancy rate, out of the new releases.

B.Unnikrishnan's suspense thriller I LOVE ME, has been mostly drowned in the frenzy associated with the Superstar releases. The film currently trails its competitors by a good margin, at the boxoffice, and is not expected to successfully chase them down either, due to the shortfall in content. It shall be a curious year end for Unni Mukundan and Isha Talwar, who had a super successful 2012 till now.

Chettayees hampered by poor release strategy

Chettayees closed their third weekend with a gross of about 1.80 Crores. It is not rocket science to apprehend that, unless the film carries extraordinary reports, and is of a mass nature, more than 60% of the life time gross is earned in the opening week. But due to limited screen space and excessive number of releases during the final quarter of the year, films like Chettayees have easily lost out on a good figure.

The film has managed above average public opinion, especially from its target audience. As it has been the case of late, the screen space has been severely reduced by new releases, and one cannot help but think that the film would have earned atleast another crore, if released in the first quarter of 2013, about 4-6 weeks prior to Vishu.

Chettayees looks at a life time gross of about 2 Crores, and shall finish at about 2700 shows in Kerala.

Madirashi and Chapters fail to kick on

MADIRASHI managed just under 90 lakhs gross from its first week as per early estimates, and is proving to be another wash out for Shaji Kailas and Jayaram. The future looks pretty dull for the venture, as its screen space has been eaten up by new releases. With the advent of the Christmas biggies on Dec 21, it can be safely assumed that Madirashi shall not cross the I Crore mark. 

CHAPTERS had a much better word of mouth, but has failed to convert them into boxoffice success, as the film is currently looking at a lifetime gross of 50 - 55 lakhs. The appreciation for Chapters has been noticeable at metros, but the film's genre and cast, prevents itself from getting any sort of patronage from rural single screens. The film which got a minimal release of 25 screens, continues in 17 screens in week 02.

Boxoffice Review - 2012 Week 49

RANK # 1 - MY BOSS

Dileep makes the year 2012 his own, with yet another super success at the Mollywood Boxoffice. The Jeethu Joseph directed comedy entertainer is simply undeterred by any of the new releases, and shall in all senses hold forte till the Christmas biggies hit the screens

RANK # 2 - MADIRASI

Madirasi opened to a dull response over the weekend, and the film's future looks even worse with the negative word of mouth. Still no respite for Shaji Kailas, and Jayaram's torrid time at the boxoffice continues.

Verdict : Below Average Opening

RANK # 3 - CHAPTERS

Chapters opened average, but managed to receive encouraging reports, which may reflect in the cash boxes this week. But how much can the film score among a wide galore of releases remains to be seen, as such films largely depend on the long run which it may manage in case of a positive public verdict. The film has been released in just 25+ theaters, and picking up a decent gross without much theatrical promotions or late releases shall be a herculean task for this venture.

RANK # 4 - CHETTAYEES

The Chettayees still struggle to get a strangle hold over the boxoffice, with new releases eating into its screen space. The collection during weekends have been encouraging, as the coming week becomes the "Make or Break" week for the film. The shoe string budget may ultimately save the producers.

RANK # 5 - FACE 2 FACE

Mammootty's nightmare continues in 2012, as Face 2 Face has emerged as another forgettable affair for the Mega Star. The film shall be shown the exit doors this coming week, in most of the centers. Another hand burner for the distributors.

RANK # 1 - MY BOSS

Dileep continues his good run at the boxoffice as My Boss takes very good opening over the weekend. However it remains to be seen how it can withstand the impact which Thupakki may inflict from Tuesday onwards. Going by the word of mouth, My Boss looks set for a decent run.

It is indeed hard luck this time around for Prithviraj. Just as ANT was looking good for a fabulous performance at the BO, it got handicapped by the theatre strike. But reports suggest that the film has done reasonably well over the weekend after the theatres reopened, which is a good sign. Now it has got a hot Thupaaki to handle.

RANK # 3 - 916

Director Mohanan's 916 has taken a mild opening, and the future of the film largely depends on word of mouth and long run. The film has been strategically placed in medium sized theatres, to avoid holdovers till the word of mouth spreads.

RANK # 4 - JAWAN OF VELLIMALA

Yet another film opening with huge hype, and falling without much of trace. Now hopes shift to Face 2 Face for the Megastar Fans.

RANK # 1 - AYALUM NJANUM THAMMIL

Lal Jose directed Prithviraj starrer has opened well at the boxoffice with favorable reports. Ayalum Njanum Thammil has secured the best opening for a Prithvi movie in 2012, and secures the Numero Uno postion in this week' BOVs Rankings.

RANK # 2 - JAWAN OF VELLIMALA

Mega Star's fans may still have to wait for an outright success from their Hero, as Mammootty's much hyped production venture has taken an above average opening with mixed - below average word of mouth.

RANK # 3 - TRIVANDRUM LODGE

Trivandrum Lodge lost a bit of ground this past weekend, with the advent of new releases. The huge opening which Maattraan managed to take in Kerala also considerably affected the movie's collections in the past 10 days.

RANK # 4 - RUN BABBY RUN

Joshiy's Run Babby Run manages to cling on to some of the major centers with pretty decent collections during weekend evening shows, though it will be a tough ask for a film, past its 50 day mark, to hold off the challenge from Mattraan any more.

RANK # 5 - HUSBANDS IN GOA

Though the Husbands did have whale of a time in Goa, the film had to face its own share of troubles at the boxoffice, especially from the second week. The movie is finally settling into the Above Average category, earning profits to UTV Motion Pictures.

Boxoffice Review - 2012 Week 40 - Banking Hours and Manthrikan Opening Dull

RANK # 1 - TRIVANDRUM LODGE

Trivandrum Lodge remained the number one performer at the Kerala boxoffice in Week 40, with the total gross touching the 4 Crore mark this past week. Though the film is quite unpopular with the families, it has found tremendous appreciation amongst the youth, especially in the major centers.

GROSS : 4.05 Crores
VERDICT : ABOVE AVERAGE




RANK # 2 - MANTHRIKAN

Manthrikan failed to kick start at the major centers, with the family audience in the evening shows providing respite to the films collections. The collections are expected to be wiped out next week with the release of Ayalum Njanum Thammil, which bears the Lal Jose brand, which is quite popular with the families.

GROSS : 0.51 Crores
VERDICT : BELOW AVERAGE OPENING





RANK # 3 - BANKING HOURS 10 TO 4

Banking Hours 10 to 4 had a dull opening this past week at the boxoffice, with about 45 - 50% attendance on the weekends, which further dropped to 20% on the weekdays. The future looks brittle for this investigation thriller, as the word of mouth is not very encouraging. The film looks set for a 65 - 70 lacs first week and not much after that.

VERDICT : BELOW AVERAGE OPENING

RANK # 4 - HUSBANDS IN GOA

Husbands in Goa fell heavily in its third weekend, which shall now prevent the film from being declared a clean hit. The movie has done enough to recover costs and is a safe venture for UTV Motion Pictures, but has lost the battle to Trivandrum Lodge, two weekends in a row now.

VERDICT : AVERAGE

RANK # 5 - RUN BABBY RUN

Run Babby Run is finally losing some steam, the past one being its 6th weekend, The movie had grossed a whopping 14 Crores from 40 days of theatrical run from Kerala, and still continues in 20+ theaters across the state. The 4th Blockbuster of the year, behind, Ordinary, Mayamohini and Thattathin Marayathu.

Trivandrum Lodge holds up well in third week

Trivandrum Lodge had an excellent second week, grossing above 1.50 Crores. The movie has managed to hold up well in its third weekend showing just about 40% drop from the second weekend. The film had become a safe venture in its second week itself, and anything which it manages to gross from now on will merely add to the profits.

Though the Malayalam new releases had a minimal impact on Trivandrum Lodge, it remains to be seen how Mattrraan and Ayalum Njaanum Thammil affects the long run of the film. As the film is not expected to be taken ahead by the families, due to its content, Trivandurm Lodge currently looks good to settle with a lifetime gross in range of 4.80 - 5.00 Crores.

The 17 day gross figure is around 4.05 Crores, from 3200+ shows. The film continues in 47 theaters in its third week.

Trivandrum Lodge marches on without family support

Trivandrum Lodge collections picked up well in its second weekend, after it had seen a slight dip during the weekdays, due to mixed word of mouth and lack of family support. The film is appreciated by the youth, , its target audience - for the bold theme, different approach and unique presentation, but is rejected outright by families. The first week gross is in the range of 2.10 Crores.

The movie saw 65 - 70% attendance in its second weekend, but is expected to drop further during the weekdays. It would be beneficial if the film gets shifted to smaller theaters from Week 3, which would help it secure a relatively long run at the boxoffice. Films like Beautiful made use of this strategy to make the best out of its word of mouth. But Trivandrum Lodge may struggle going forward, due to its much criticized content.

It would be an achievement if the film can end up with a lifetime share of 2.7 - 2.8 Crores, which would help Time Ads Entertainment, in the cause of recouping its cost of 4 Crores. The satellite rights are secured by Asianet.

VERDICT : AVERAGE

Husbands in Goa takes 2.90 Crores in Opening Week

Husbands in Goa manages to take a good opening week gross of 2.90 Crores from 75 theaters. The movie has been found reasonably engaging by the families, and is currently looking set to finish at and around 4.75 - 5.0 Crores lifetime gross from Kerala. Husbands in Goa has received mixed - negative reports from the media and critics.

After securing a brilliant opening of about 2 Crores in the weekend, the film saw a daily drop of about 25% during the weekdays. The collection during the weekend, though encouraging, was slightly hit by the release of new Sathyan Anthikad film. The film is expected to collect another 1 - 1.2 Crores this week, on the back of a half decent second weekend.

The film is produced and marketed by UTV Motion Pictures, and production cost is on the higher side, estimated to be in the range of 5 Crores including publicity. The film may break even with the help of satellite rights, which reports suggest as acquired by Surya TV for an undisclosed amount.

VERDICT : AVERAGE

Molly Aunty Rocks disappoints at Boxoffice

Ranjith Sankar directed Molly Aunty Rocks is set to sink without much of a trace at the Mollywood boxoffice.  Despite opening to mixed - positive reports from the critics and the audience, the movie never took off from the slow start it had. The 2 week gross of the movie is estimated to be a touch below 1.25 Crores.

The metro centers, which could have been the respite for this kind of a venture, also are not reporting gung ho collections, with the film showing in less than 10 theaters in its third weekend. The promotions for the movie are still strong in television and fm radios, but they may now prove to be needless, as the film has lost its major centers, to Trivandrum lodge and Husbands in Goa, the later being the preferred choice for the families, this past weekend.

The producer may not burn his hands, as the shoot was wrapped within 30 days, at a shoe-string budget, but the distributors are set to incur heavy losses, especially from the metros, where the expectations for the film were pretty high.

VERDICT : FLOP

RANK # 1 - HUSBANDS IN GOA

Husbands in Goa takes an excellent opening at Kerala Boxoffice, continuing to prove that multi-starrers are guaranteed an initial. The word of mouth is average, as it is for such comedy capers.

Q : Can Mayamohini be considered as an All Time Blockbuster considering the profits which it made ? 

A : Yes. Mayamohini is an ATBB, but not on the basis of profits. A film can become profitable even before release. But unlike Hits or Super Hits or even Blockbusters, All Time Blockbusters earn their name from theatrical collections, distributor share and the theatrical run alone, and not from profitability.

Q : Can the TV rights and Audio rights be considered for determining whether a movie is a HIT ?

A : There are people of either opinion, but BOV believes, as Cinema is a business like any other venture, the income from all the sources must be considered while determining its status. Huge rights amounts are fetched either due to the film's successful performance at the theaters, or due to the brand value associated with it. The makers deserve to reap the benefits of either of these scenarios. But however, the film should have earned reasonable profits for all, or almost all of the parties involved, in order to be classified as successful. Though 'Boxoffice' strictly means collection from theaters, we believe there is no meaning in classifying a film as an unsuccessful project, when it earns multiple times more than industry average profits, even if it is predominantly from the rights.

Q : Can you please give details about the final collection report of Diamond Necklace ? 

A : Diamond Neclace ended its Theatrical run after 119 Days with 6700+ shows in Kerala, grossing 5.30 Crores, with a share of about 2.30 Crores. The satellite rights are reportedly fetched by Surya TV for about 1.60 Crores. Joy Alukkas had given around 80 lakhs to advertise their product in the film. The movie got an excellent run overseas, though collection details are not available.

The Joshiy directed Mohanlal starrer continues to do tremendous business in major centers. It has now become the 4th highest grossing movie of the year behind Mayamohini, Ordinary and Thattathin Marayathu. The new releases have had minimal impact on RBR's run.

RANK # 3 - THAPPANA

Thappana drops back to Number 3 this week, as the collections saw a huge dip during the weekdays. With the advent of new releases, the movie shall find itself in a vulnerable position during the coming weeks. But Thappana has grossed well enough to cover up its production costs from theaters and rights.
